Posted September 30, 200816 yr Hi, I have a laying hen.Her eggs are starting to hatch. The father of the eggs resently died and when I found him just before he died he was panting with his feathers fluffed out in the breeding box he also had sloppy poo.The hen of the eggs has started to act like him just before he died. What is rong with my hen?and what should I do?
September 30, 200816 yr What's wrong with your hen: she's sick, there could be all sorts of things causing it and we really can't diagnose the problem here What you should do: Take her to see an AVIAN vet. If you let us know where you are located then we can possibly recommend someone Good Luck Alxso have you got a foster hen for the babies? If she dies at this point then the babies stand almost no chance as they are pretty much too small to hand raise so it's really important you get the hen treated. In the meantime put a warm light over the cage and keep her away from drafts Edited September 30, 200816 yr by melbournebudgies
September 30, 200816 yr I agree wit MelbourneBudgies. Also, you possibly have an out break - have you bought any new birds recently and added them to your aviary?? Also do you have mice that can get access to the birds food?? You need to get to an avian vet ASAP, even if your hen dies, put her in the fridge (wrapped in a number of plastic bags) Wash your hands thouroghly. The vet can do an autopsy to determine the cause of death and hopfully save your remiaining birds. Edited October 1, 200816 yr by KAZ
September 30, 200816 yr Also if you start to feel sick make sure you see your doctor and let him know you keep birds
September 30, 200816 yr I agree ASAP, I hope it is not too late, whenever your birds are sick you should not wait and see if it gets better but get them to an AVIAN vet immediately. Right now keep her warm, quiet with her eggs. What color are the poops? If they are white it means she has not been eating and you may have to feed her if they are black she has not been drinking.

Hi, Her poops are green.
September 30, 200816 yr This most likely means she hasn't been eating, doesn't bode well for her chicks, she needs to be seen urgently.
September 30, 200816 yr Green Poos can be not eating like MB said, or something far more serious. Use precautions like hand washing and clothes changing etc How are your other birds?? Also, have your birds had a period of time where they have had no food? Edited September 30, 200816 yr by **Liv**

September 30, 200816 yr you introduced a new bird who was also showing signs of illness (sloppy poo) to your other birds. thats not good. Please take your hen to an avian vet. You could loose all your birds if you don't find out what is happening.
September 30, 200816 yr You have learnt a hard lesson here Clancy, all new birds should be quarantined for this reason Edited October 1, 200816 yr by Neat

September 30, 200816 yr Author You have learnt a hard lesson here lancy, all new birds should be quarantined for this reason my name is clancy not lancyClancy, you need to contact your closest avian vet and have her seen TODAYIm going to conntact a vet today.
September 30, 200816 yr Im going to contact a vet today. good to hear We would all be very interested in what the vet advises
October 1, 200816 yr Clancy, it seems through lack of knowledge yopu have been buying birds and not quarantining them form other birds to see if they carried illnesses and you also seem to have put them straight down to breed. Stress creates illness in birds. Stress is from being caught, being moved to a shop to be sold, going to a new home, being ina new cage with other birds, breeding, and so on. You have had a bird go through all of this and then put it straight down to breed which is the most stressful time of all for birds. Sounds also like the birds you bought were ill when you bought them but still put down to breed. Please read our articles on quarantining birds, on breeding ( age of breeding birds must be over one year of age ), and looking for signs of health or not. There is more to budgie breeding than buying new birds and putting them in a cage with a nestbox. Edited October 2, 200816 yr by KAZ

I just never thought that I should quarantine them my mum reckons I should do that from now on and I have got knowledge my poppy used to breed budgies. We brought too other birds from the same place at the same time and brought them home with us but they arent sick I don't think he was sick when i brought him. October 1, 200816 yr Just because the others don't seem sick now doesn't mean they aren't carrying something that hasn't shown itself yet. The two that got sick are the ones breeding which is stressful, hte other may have been lucky because they aren't as stressed.

October 1, 200816 yr Well I don't think this back and forth is going to help the hen at all, I do hope you have made the avian vet appointment, please keep us informed on what he/she says. Tell us when your appointment is.
October 1, 200816 yr A really good article to read.......... http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....c=22067&hl=
October 1, 200816 yr Clancy, This conversation has been going on for 3 hours! Did you get an appointment? You need to tell you mum & dad that the birds are very VERY sick! If you are breeding the all in the same place they all will end up sick! There are a few reasons why they had sloppy poo - BROWN poo( it is getting worse) If you do not see an Avian vet today I hold little hope the Her and the babies that are hatching ..... Like the others have said - Hard lesson learnt BUT this comes with research and experience! Please see the vet for the sake of the Bird and the babies that are due to hatch
