Posted September 29, 200816 yr I'm looking to name my little one now and want to know if it's a boy or a girl. From his genetic make up (mum being light green dom pied and dad being light green opaline) I was told that any males I got out of the clutch would be dom pied and any females would be Opaline or Opaline split for dom pied... and since it appears to be dom pied (with the patch of clear feathers on it's head) I'm thinking a male??? Anyone want to take a guess? Here's pics...
September 29, 200816 yr Need a good clear photo of the cere. The bub is a dominant pied, but its too soon to see if there are opaline in the feather markings yet Edited September 30, 200816 yr by **Liv**
September 30, 200816 yr It looks a bit like a boy yes. From those parents you mentioned, fifty percent of all the chicks, boys and girls, will be dominant pied. There's no such as split for dominant pied because it's a dominant gene. However, all the boys will be split for opaline and all the girls will be opaline. This chick looks like a normal pied and if it's a boy, it will be split for opaline.
September 30, 200816 yr The first chick is dominant pied and the second looks to be opaline. Some of the females will be opaline dominant pieds, they won't be split for dominant pied, you'll be able to see both mutations on the same bird. Some of the males will be normals. Very white down on a chick is an early indication that it will be an opaline

What is the difference of opaline dominant pied and dominate pied split for opaline???Need a good clear photo of the cere. October 2, 200816 yr Author Showing off my little one on another topic, some one guessed that this is a dominant pied split for opaline male.... ? Anyone else wanna take a stab at it
October 2, 200816 yr Definitely dominant pied. Looks hen in that photo are you using the flash on your camera ?? That would explain the difference. Edited October 2, 200816 yr by KAZ

No, no flash, I learned my lesson on flash and budgie mix... a no no! :laughter: Can it be a girl based on genetics? Mum is Dom Pied and dad is Opaline.
October 2, 200816 yr Author I would say hen based on that last photo What about these pics then? Still hen?
October 2, 200816 yr Does have a lot of down on it ... I am saying that it is an Opaline dom pied Edited October 2, 200816 yr by Neat added
October 2, 200816 yr It's not opaline and the down is not a clear white to be opaline so it's a green dom pied... I can't tell sex yet, those photo's and it's age aren't revealing enough traits yet I'd say give it another week then take another photo and ask again.
October 2, 200816 yr Author Does have a lot of down on it ... I am saying that it is an Opaline dom piedI hope it is... that will be soooooo pretty! It's not opaline and the down is not a clear white to be opaline so it's a green dom pied... Just want to learn. I see the Dominant Pied by the markings on the head and wings, but what is it that leads you to say not an opaline at this point?
October 2, 200816 yr The grey down feathers Also I would say it has too much barring on it's head to be opaline (even at this age)
October 2, 200816 yr Author The grey down feathers Also I would say it has too much barring on it's head to be opaline (even at this age) thanks mb...
October 2, 200816 yr Author I agree...it isnt opaline. okay KAZ thanks ... so that means this must be a boy? Opaline = girl, Dominant Pied = boy.
October 2, 200816 yr Dom pied= boy or girl Opaline = girl Not opaline=boy. The chick has grey down which signs early in the nest its a normal, white down signs its an opaline. Male dom pied.

Pie, your guess is a dom pied male... does that mean he is dom pied split for opaline or just dom pied?
October 2, 200816 yr It would be just a Dominant Pied, he would only have been split for opaline if his mom was an opaline. Edited October 2, 200816 yr by Elly
