Posted September 28, 200816 yr Since you have joined BBC what are some things you have learned, you can repeat what others have said or add even more. I look forward to reading everyone's answers and having other members read and share. Somethings I have learned: 1. The Importanace of Quarantine - I didn't realize that when you got a new bird that it should always be quarantined for 30 days, in fact the avian vets will tell you 90 days. 2. Food & Nutrition has been very interesting subject for me and I didn't realize that lettuce was a junk food and that birds really need a wide variety of diets, along with the toxic food. 3. Talking about toxic...I had not a clue that teflon was poisons to our birds there is much more...what have you learned? Edited October 12, 200816 yr by KAZ
September 28, 200816 yr The most important thing i learnt when i joined was handrearing a budgie which help me to save 5 budgies. I also learnt about quarantining and that there was more to a birds diet than seed from this forum.
September 28, 200816 yr I have learned a lot about genetics and sexing (and still learning more all the time), nutrition and what to feed my birds and LOTS about breeding (which is my current learning curve).
September 28, 200816 yr I have learned more than i can even remember Genetics, diseases, medications, food, supplements, basic veterinary skills, telling gender, mutations, breeding.... and the list goes on - see told you i learned more than i can remember
September 28, 200816 yr I have also learned the importance of quarantine. Quarantine is just not for budgies either. I quarantine any new guppy that l buy from the store, l bought 4 new guppies from my LFS a few weeks ago and two developed fin rot and died. I treated the other 2 and now they are fine. If l did not quarantined them l would have lost a lot more in my community tank. I have learned how to go about and hand tame my two older budgies. I too have learned that they thrive on a variety diet and not just seeds. One other thing that l learned alot about is all the different types of mutations, l really had no idea there where so many. When l go to the petstore l can actually now know what type of budgie mutations l'm looking at and not just another pretty bird. Edited September 28, 200816 yr by birdluv
September 28, 200816 yr I now know that a seed only diet is not the best for a budgie, I now know just about everything listed above, I know the difference between a bird vet and a regular vet. I found out about wing clipping, and breeding and hatching and candling eggs and raising young and litter methods and telling sex and purchasing avairys and cages and how to build a breeding room. I now know about the clicker training method and Ivermectin and what scaley mites are and red mites and air sack mites and freak myself out that one or more of my birds as one of the above I now know about fumes and what not to have around my bird, I know about left over husks in the seed dish, I could keep going but most importantly I know how to care for my birds in the correct manner!
September 29, 200816 yr There is so much I have learnt. This includes information on: * genetics - mutations, dominant and recessive genes, sex-linked genes, as well as those strange abnormalities that life can throw up * quarantining - why it is important, and that it is much more than simply time * the difference between pet types and show birds * different foods * diseases and the best ways to counteract and prevent these from occuring * plenty of breeding hints There are so many different things that I did not mention , and still so much more to learn. September 29, 200816 yr The main thing that I hav learnt is genetics and mutations, but the other thing I have learnt is that if I ever have a problem I can't deal with on my ownI have a great support network here that will do their best to help me

October 6, 200816 yr wow... what have I learnt... I can honestly say everything... when I joined BBC I was looking at the possibility of owning budgies. I wanted to learn more because I had always wanted to own some since I was young, my neighbors used to have some and I would 'help' them out when I was a kid. I certainly didn't remember anything from then but I knew they came in different shapes and sizes... I now know what those colours are. Possible breeding outcomes... what kinds of set ups I prefere... I know about quarantine... thats just a snippet of what I now know.. but the most important information I learnt came from Daz, a guy that I would say knows everything about budgies and that is this:- I will never know everything. October 12, 200816 yr I have learnt that loving a little creature covered in feathers does NOT necessarily mean I am crazy!! :chickendance: I have also learnt not to panic if something seems to go wrong with my budgies, that there are experienced members on the forum who can offere advice ...and that I'm never "alone". I have also learnt that there are many wonderful caring members on this forum who keep amazing me with their dedication to caring for the babies, the very old and the very sick birds! :angel1:

October 26, 200816 yr I have learnt that you guys are so well informed when it comes to our little feathered friends I too learnt that both my budgies were/are girls - with boy names I learnt that no matter how silly (being a one budge owner) my question may seem, your kind heartedness shows through The main thing I have learnt of late is that I have become a BBC junkie...haha I keep learning new things everytime I sign on for the night and will continue to do so I'm currently learning the patience and time its taking to try and tame our Benny....but its worth it
October 26, 200816 yr I have learnt everything I now know about budgies. I have also learnt that everyone on here is so nice... I could never imagined I'd become so close to so many people... October 26, 200816 yr I've learnt a lot too.... Most valuable piece of information lately was about the 'safe' forms of calcium vs iodine and calcium blocks made up of plaster of paris. The pinned topics about mega and psiticosis .... Recognizing pieds, clearwings and dilutes. and of course genetics, which I still can't get my head around, just as well I'm trying to breed the bird not the variety
October 26, 200816 yr Well in a day and a half I've learnt: 1. you guys use words I've never heard of. 2. there's more great info in here than I'll ever be able to absorb. 3. that I'd better shut-up and keep reading.

But they are a very patient bunch. I named my two birds after my mum and dad... phillip (lip) and ellen (len) only trouble is I think lip is the hen and Len is the cock... thats if Len is a cock... thats something I haven't learnt yet. Edited October 26, 200816 yr by JimmyBanks
