Posted September 28, 200816 yr okay have heard of this but never till now witnessed it. I have 2 female cockatiels and an SPCA (RSPCA) rescued budgie. We nick named him "SAB" (smart arsed budgie!) because like the 100's of budgies l had in days gone by when l did breed and show, he had so much energy, spunk and cheek. Well didn't he think he had fallen on his feet and landed in budgie nirvana ... not one but 2 little hens hanging out for his sweet affections and attention. Of course the cockatiel with the brightest florescence soon caught his little eye and before you knew it he was sidling up to her and whispering sweet ( well not quiet whispering, more like a budgerigar scream ! ) nothings in her ear and then the preening and all the lovely dovey gooey stuff started. Never mind she rarely reciprocated (apart from to hang her head to be a hussy and encourage him more with his attentive preening!), he just didn't care. That was till she started accepting his offers of regurgitated food ! Then the other little hen, well in season she went, the back arched, the distinctive little trilling for a cock bird. Well this then triggered off the other hen. Next minute we look up and here is SAB going for it for his sweet little life trying to mate with one of the hens as if she was his species !!!!! Then next minute he finishes there and dives onto the next hen !!!! This has gone on for several days, with no sign of him running out of energy or puff (think we might rename him Viagra ! ). At first l tried to stop him ( that incurred the evil budgie eye ! ) but have given up as l cannot be there 24/7 to watch them ! Has anyone else seen this ?
September 28, 200816 yr I have 30 budgies and 8 tiels living together and i have seen my fair share of their love affairs and biffups, but i have never seen a budgie and a tiel try to mate
September 28, 200816 yr I suppose it's not unheard of, there are all kinds of weird hybrids out there so it's certainly possible, maybe you would get blue cockatiels I guess if you think about it, a randy budgie will have his way with the perch or his favorite toy so just picking the only available other birds is probably not that surprising
September 28, 200816 yr I have see the feeding back and forth before but not the mating, I am surprised that the tiel is letting it happen
September 28, 200816 yr I have a distinct feeling that I would be putting in a nest box out of some weird perverted curiosity but I don't know if it would be a good idea...
September 28, 200816 yr MB that would not be a good idea because they you could promote a tiel to lay clear eggs and tiels are one of the hardest to stop once they start .
September 28, 200816 yr Don't know if you get them overseas Elly but there are alot of strange hybrids here (not that I entirely agree with doing it deliberately), people breed galahs with corellas and all sorts of other things so the eggs may not necessarily be clear
September 28, 200816 yr I don't think I have ever heard of a budgie and cocktiel success breeding that is why I say that oh yes we get all the different hybirds and mixes here too...I am just saying that these 2 birds are not as closely related like those 2 are and again I haven't heard of a successful hybrid cross and I think it is asking for trouble that you may not want ...that is all.
September 28, 200816 yr LOL MB me too .... Elly, I have a guy that has fertile eggs 1 hatched today and it is from a Ringneck and a supurb ( i think that is what it is ) I laughed when he told me ... But yeah , they mix em up down under
September 28, 200816 yr I believe if the species are very closely related like a horse and a donkey but a budgie and tiel...hmmm will have to do some research I suppose...
September 28, 200816 yr Tan, thats is simply amazing !! I am so gobsmacked The best part of all is the way you tell the story...as I can actually picture everything you say. You have a great way with words :hap: By the way............welcome to our forum :hap:
September 28, 200816 yr Author okay time for some pictures l think ! We have had the kids staying with us for this first week of the school holidays and the 7 year old he has been making some fascinating comments about why doesn't SAB let Precious have a piggy back ride ? l don't think its fair SAB is always getting the piggy back ride ! Oh dear the things kids say ! His sister who is just over a year older reckons its "gross " that they are alll having sex and goes and covers the cage over !!!! The only concern l have is that the hens will do what cockatiels are notorious for doing, laying like bantams at this time of year and not knowing its a good time to slow down or stop !
September 28, 200816 yr Can you work on reducing the daylight hours? Do you cover their cage? If you do you can cover it more like 12-14 hours for a week and see if this decreases this behavior, all you can do is work with the enviroment that makes the behavior happen. You may have to separate them if you find the cockatiel has had enough of it too.
