Posted September 28, 200816 yr Today while out shopping with my mum we went into our local pet shop just to have a look around... 20mins later and with much debate we walked out with a beautiful little yellow budgie. It was love at first sight! His name is Renji... if he is a he. I’m not 100% sure. He’s so quiet and docile which is a shock since my first budgie Holly was very feisty and still is. I've got him in a new cage and away from Holly for quarantine but he wants to get over where she is and sits close to the side of his cage to try and see her. it’s very cute! She has shown no interest in him at all so far and hasn't even looked in his direction. What would be the best way for me to introduce them and eventually get them in the same cage without any drama? Also Renji seems to be huge in comparison to Holly and shes nearly a year old! will this be a problem? Here are some photos of him. They arent the best but i didn't want to handle him to much till he gets settled in. If anyone can give me an estimate on how old he is or if in fact he is a he that would be great! Also i'm curious as to what mutations he has. I've only just started reading about mutations but can't figure them out for the life of me! And heres and old photo of Holly so shes not left out!
September 28, 200816 yr Hello and welcome. Renji is adorable and yes he is a boy Well done for using quarantine!!! 30 days is the recomended time. if he gets too eger to see Holly, then try moving him further away - breaking quarantine early can have devastating effects. September 28, 200816 yr Congratulations! What a sweetie. After your 30 day quarintine in seperate rooms, I'd move their cages into the same room... next to each other if you wish(and if they are happy with it)... then next step would be to have out of cage time together... then in cage time together... then the same cage. These steps could take months... or longer... or it may NOT work. The key would be to work slowly and see how they get along... good luck with it when the time is right. Good on you for quarintining and on a very nice buy (((As to thier size difference... I wouldn't worry. Size doesn't seem to make much difference when it comes to budgies)))
September 28, 200816 yr Renji is a real sweetie. The size difference wont pose any problems for them being playmates. It's all about personality really Good luck with it all and welcome to the forum
September 28, 200816 yr He is a doll, after quarantine you can certainly gradually introduce them. Here is an article from our FAQ section on how to Introduce another bird into your flock. There are many more articles too that you can read about nutrition, behavior etc... by the way...he is a he . How to introduce a 2nd(or more) bird (s) to your existing flock Quarantine Program is the first thing you will need to do before your introduce any new birds to your existing birds (flock). Here is a method that I have used and found to be useful when introducing a new bird to the existing flock. This method is primary to be used if you are introducing in a small setting (such a inside cage or a small aviary). Those who have large aviaries may have different methods since the situation is different. When I introduce Pretty to Merlin it was a gradual process. When quarantine was over these are the steps I took. 1. I first let them out together on top of the cage with complete supervision 2. I kept their cages side by side but not where they could beak fight or pick at each others toes. So about 2 inches apart 3. I then let Merlin go in Pretty's cage during the day supervised only 4. I then let Merlin go in Pretty's cage during the day unsupervised only after I knew that everyone body was settled. 5. After I knew the daytime unsupervised time was okay, I then housed them together. Now not everyone may do what I did but this is why I did this. When I first introduced them Pretty thought Merlin was a girl (he was a boy) and kept trying to jump on his back plus he was very hyper flirting like mad. Merlin kept refusing his actions of love and would do a lot of dolphin noises. I moved on to the next step when Merlin was doing so much dolphin "mad" like budgie noises and Pretty settled down. For me it took just a little under 2 weeks. Everyone is different some members can put their budgies in straight away (after quarantine is over) but I could not.
