Posted March 17, 200520 yr My Mum has a pair of budgies that have laid eggs. One of them hatched a couple of weeks ago and the male helped look after it feeding both the hen and chick. However a few days ago anther egg hatched and ever since that the hen wont let the male go near the chicks. She keeps attacking the male every time he tries to go near them. Doent anybody know why? And what should my mum do about this?
March 17, 200520 yr Normally the male feeds the female and she feeds the chicks for the first few days. The male only helps with feeding from about week 3 - 4 and fully takes over just before they fledge. You don't say how big a time gap between chicks so it is hard to be specific but - The hen might not be happy with the male helping with the NEW chick so soon because it is not what normally happens.
March 17, 200520 yr Theres 11 days between them. I think your right because the male wants to go down and feed them but she wont let him, maybe my mum should take the male out until the younger chick has grown. The females feeding both of them at the minute so the chicks would be okay.
March 17, 200520 yr Don't take the male out! He is feeding the hen. When she pops out to poop and they quickly kiss - he is regurgitating to her - when the chick is young - she doesn't have time ot leave it to feed or it will chill.
