Posted September 27, 200816 yr well I thought I would start a journal on these 2 pairs as they both seem to be showing signs that soon we hay get some eggs. At the moment both females are in boxes and coming out to have a bit of fun with the boys. I am very excited as they have all been separated for a while now and finally seem to be getting it together. Cant wait for the eggs
September 27, 200816 yr Yah... how exciting for you. Good luck and I look forward to following this thread
October 11, 200816 yr Author I have just been and done the morning rounds,I noticed yesterday that molly had a lot of feathers in her nest box(she had thrown all the shavings out a while ago) and today there is a nice big egg!! Mickey and minnie still don't have any and I haven't even seen her in the box for a while. I am thinking about moving them into the other side of the aviary as she just doesn't seem happy indoors in the breeding cage. Edited October 17, 200816 yr by Neat Spelling
October 11, 200816 yr Indoors breeding for budgies can be sometimes a little quieter than they are used to. Mostly they like the aviary sounds. Great news on your egg
October 12, 200816 yr Author Great news Molly has 3 eggs so far and is sitting like a champ, I am adding millet sprays to keep her going. She is so good, she doesn't even mind when I check on the eggs. I just tap on the door and she pops out so I can peek. As soon as I step away she is back inside. Mickey and Minnie have been put into their own aviary and are loving it. I'm not too worried about them breeding just yet, I will let minnie get used to her surroundings first and if they do breed then it's a bonus. She does seem so much happier than in the breeding cabinet. They have even been down the bottom of the cage picking at the rabbits food and grass. The rabbit doesn't mind though. So all is moving along at my house!! Edited October 17, 200816 yr by Neat Changed Avairy to Aviary
October 13, 200816 yr That's really exciting for you Molly, just wait until the chicks arrive :chickendance: . Edited October 13, 200816 yr by maesie changed till to until. Please do not use unapproved shortcuts.
October 17, 200816 yr Author Just a quick update, Molly has more eggs yay the first one is definitely bigger than the rest. She is still sitting nicely and coming out for me to look inside each morning. Minnie is doing so well in the aviary and has been exploring the nest box, so here's hoping. She doesn't even seem to mind when I walk in their. Cant wait for more eggs and babies :hap: Edited October 17, 200816 yr by Neat Changed Avairy to Aviary
October 20, 200816 yr Author molly has now laid 6 eggs. I found one of them this morning pushed aside and cold so I brought it inside and candled it. It wasnt fertile. I think it is amazing that the hen can tell this and push it away to focus on the others. So here is hoping the rest of the eggs are all fertile. I will try and candle them later. She is still sitting on the egg I fostered to her I am hoping it hatches and grows up healthy. The pair are I thought blue normals but one of their last babies looked a dilute blue with cinnamon wings. Is that possible?
October 20, 200816 yr have no idea but look forward to finding out with you Genetics really isn't my thing.
October 20, 200816 yr Yes it is, the cock must be carrying cinnamon and the chick will be a hen. The cinnamon will dilute the colour a bit
October 22, 200816 yr Author okay, so now I am starting to really worry, as I said before molly is spending a lot of time out of the box, I am going out several times a day and hosing the roof and spraying the birds but am still worried about the time she is off the eggs. There are now 8 eggs altogether and when I candled them 6 were fertile and the 2 newer ones too early to tell. I am starting to think they wont survive. The first one is due to hatch in 6 or 7 days. I will be so upset if it doesnt work and Im even thinking about taking the nest boxes out and wait till next year as it's only going to get hotter. The last clutch of her eggs never hatched and were dis. I have no other pairs down at the moment so cant foster
October 22, 200816 yr Author oh kaz really? would you mind taking at least 4? do you have room? can I bring now? all is good, molly is in nest box and tommy as well. The weather cooling down seems to have helped. lets hope the rain comes and cools things for a few more days! Thanks for the offer anyway kaz.I will still be interested to see if the eggs end up hatching. After this clutch I am taking the box out and going to give them a rest. By then we should have build a more effective shade for them, Maybe even change position of avairy. October 22, 200816 yr In Bunnings catalog there is triangular shade sails for under $20 right now :rip: Anytime anyone wants to transport eggs.......you put them in some warm seed in a dish ( the seed holds the temp ) and you have about half an hour to get them under another hen.
October 30, 200816 yr Author Molly is a mum yay I went and checked this morning as I have been getting worried because of when she was out of the nest box all day in the heat. At 6:30 there was nothing no sound or sign that anything was going to hatch. But 4 hours later I checked again and there was a beautiful little baby with white fluff all over it. I cant believe how big it actually is. Even better news another egg was starting to open, had been cracked all the way round and starting to lift up. So I got a double whammy!! I really wanted to wait and watch it hatch but because molly is a first time mum, I thought I better not.
