I thought I would update this post, as I had a bit of a panic Sunday night and knee jerk reacted. Luckily for me, all has turned out well, but I made a mistake without even thinking, so I thought I would share my mistake.

I got home Sunday night and went to check the birds before turning out their light. I looked in the "blue" box and the babies were literally paddling in "mud". It was very wet and smelly and I actually had to bathe each of the babies and dry them as they were covered in poo. I cleaned the box, put new shavings in and treated mum with sulphadim. The next day, all was well, but I was really concerned with losing my blue hen and there seems to have been so many breeding disasters this season, my only thought was making sure she didnt get even more sick. She looked a bit haggard and lean to me, and I didnt want her to lose further condition. I had other hens who were able to foster the four blue babies, so I placed them. On discussion about this with someone very knowledgeable, it was pointed out to me, what if it wasnt just an upset tummy (which is what I suspect, cause mum is doing fine and fit and healthy), but a transmittable disease and I would have spread that disease to 3 different hens, and their babies as well. I am very lucky, that all the babies are very well and being well looked after by their foster parents, there is no further sign of sickness anywhere and Dharma and Tibet are also looking well and chirpy. They are still in a holding cage and being treated with sulphadim to be sure. So luck is on my side this time, but once again, in this big learning curve of breeding, I have learned a valuable lesson, fortunately, not the hard way B)

Oh you poor thing ... I would have been freaking out too mate ...

Oh boy...good thing you are checking your boxes, how did the mud get there if I may ask.

Well it wasnt mud as such, that was my polite way of saying really runny, sticky, poo :D

Just an update on these guys. The blue pair are very healthy and now back in the aviary, I am hoping to use them again next season. Their four babies were fostered to 3 nests, I gave Nirvana and Suki two of them. Here are a couple of quick snaps I took of all five babies together. Nirvana and Suki's babies all have yellow faces and I think two are like mum and the youngest may be a grey like dad.

Just my luck - with pet babies you want boys and with show babies you want girls! LOL :D

ooh ooh me me!!

Keep me in mind if you have any male show baby rejects, if your pets are all females. :D

I won't show it (unless budgie owning is as addictive as everyone says) but will give it a safe, happy home :D

The problem with "show rejects" is that you really need to keep your show type birds for at least 6 to 18 months to see their potential. It's not until this time that you see their full growth and decide then if they are big enough to keep for further breeding or showing. If I sold one of my show birds and the person who bought it from me showed it, I wouldnt have an issue with that. Good luck to them :D But, what I guess I'm really saying is, that my show birds are not handled constantly like my pets for sale and therefore, they would be sold as aviary birds further down the track. Of course, any budgie CAN be tamed, it just takes longer with adults :D

Ah I see, I'm learning so much on here. :D

No a pet is definitely what I'm after. Do you know if any are males yet or is it too early to tell.

I just went to see if I could tell, but mum and dad are in feeding so I wont disturb them right at the moment. I am having a bit of a problem with that clutch, as I believe the mum is plucking the babies - more in the Boof and Sophie topic.

Yes I read that. I hope it all goes okay for them!
