Posted September 26, 200816 yr I found a quail egg in the bottom of my aviary but i only have females so i did some googling to find info on whether they lay eggs without a male present but could not find the answer . Does anyone know if they do or dont. Maybe one of my females is not a female. None of them have bibs.
September 26, 200816 yr They sure do, i have one in my weero cage on "break" from being picked on and 4 weeks after being in there she has laid an egg
September 26, 200816 yr Author Thanks Libby, i will just toss the egg then seeing it would not be fertile. The problem is the kids saw the egg and thought it was cute so they want me to get a male now.
September 26, 200816 yr Baby quails are ever so gorgeous!!!! but extremely fragile i love having them, but when you get 7-15 at a time they can become a handful in containing them and giving them somewhere to live I take mine from the aviary with their mother put them in a plastic box/container with a warm lamp and feed them egg and biscuit and poppy seeds with a shallow lid of water filled with marbles (they can drown easily) Once they're mostly feathered the mother is removed... It's good fun though
September 26, 200816 yr Or eat it yourself! My kids think mini eggs are oh so cool hard boiled and put in a salad
September 26, 200816 yr hehe by mini eggs do you mean you've given them Budgie eggs MB, or some other birds ?
September 26, 200816 yr quail eggs They're a delicacy don't you know No reason you couldn't eat a budgie egg but they're even smaller than a quail egg Edited September 26, 200816 yr by melbournebudgies
September 26, 200816 yr Author i did not realise you could eat quail eggs, my kids would love to eat a tiny egg.
September 26, 200816 yr Just think of them like mini chickens They are fiddly to peel but I don't mind doing it just to see their grins I like to put them in little salads and things like that, they have a slightly stronger flavour than a chook egg. Dont forget they are very small so don't cook them as long and dip them in cool water to cool them quickly.
September 26, 200816 yr Hehe I've never eaten anything out of the norm (chicken, fish, pork, beef and lamb) Not even, roo or duck or any of the other Semi-normal things haha I need to start experiementing Although I don't think I'll be having quail eggies
September 26, 200816 yr Quail eggs are a delicacy, very European. Right up there with caviar. Just think you'll be able to tell your friends that for lunch you had a 'mixed leaf salad with capers and quail eggs'
