Posted September 26, 200816 yr I was wondering what do you think is the best way to feed your budgie? and what do you base the diet on? thanks Edited September 26, 200816 yr by *libby*
September 26, 200816 yr i feed my birds their seed mix (Finch with added hulled oats and sunflower seeds) in D-cup for the cabinets or self dispensers in the aviary. Their water is in Rabbit dripper bottles for the aviary and D-cups for the cabinets and all greens and fresh/soft foods are put in bowls/plates
September 26, 200816 yr Here is what my birds got for their meals today........... The premium bird seed blend with added japanese millet. Soft food with egg, grated carrot, sliced greens, wholemeal bread, calcivet, vitamin b12 Soaked seed with budgie premium blend, triticale wheat, mung beans, hulled oats and hulled sunflower. Bok choy and english spinach. Last thing they all get a little branch from the hibiscus trees out back....in two more days they will get their peppermint tree branches. Seeding grasses are picked for the ones in breeder cabinets and any feeding chicks also have a little tray of whole powdered egg to use as they enter the nestbox to feed their chicks.
September 26, 200816 yr Okay so there is another topic already about nutrition... sooo... This is what my budgies eat: The breeding pair: quality seed mix, budgie starter (paswells), egg and buscit mix, gum leaves, calcivite plus in drinking water, sprouts and fresh fruits or veg (mainly brocoli) Rookie: Whatever I am eating!! hahah. All the above plus pellets and the ocassional millet for training.

Passwells budgie starter is the equivelant of hand rearing with seeds mixed in and is usually given to babies being weaned onto seed after being hand reared?
September 26, 200816 yr Box says: Feed a heaped teaspoon of prepared budgie starter per week about 1 month before budgies are paired for breeding..... Once paired, offer a teaspoon a day... After the hen lays offer ad lib.... blah blah blah untill chicks fledge. I believe its a good soft food. Other opinions? Edited September 26, 200816 yr by jwancia

September 26, 200816 yr I personally wouldn't bother. If you're going to feed them soft food feed an egg mix A home made one is always better than a box one
September 26, 200816 yr Well im always willing to try things. I figured it wouldnt hurt to offer it to them... Is this wrong? We say to give a varied diet and thats what I am trying to do. (plus i am a spend addict! when im at work I buy everything I can for them) Edited September 26, 200816 yr by jwancia

We say to give a varied diet and thats what I am trying to do.(plus i am a spend addict! when im at work I buy everything I can for them) Maybe you spend too much time reading the BLURB on all the packets and believing too much of the promotional sales info. Step away from all that and think for yourself. Visit someone who has the healthiest birds and see what they are feeding them and why it works. Not everything good comes out of packets. Budgie starter is good. BUT that BLURB on the packet is trying to make you buy it week after week to fill their pockets with $$$$'s. The way I see it packet food works for busy people and maybe you are just too busy and it works for you Edited September 26, 200816 yr by KAZ
September 26, 200816 yr Okays I dont know if im too keen on this conversation anymore... All of a sudden I dont have time for my animals, and being put back in my place because I read the packets... Who's to say that I dont talk to other breeders? Four of us at my work breed birds. One has being doing it for over 20 year, from red tailed black cockatoos to budgies and finches. I understand you may be trying to help. But maybe you are trying to put me in a "typical mould" as well. What is wrong with packet food?! How many of the people in the forum dont by some sort of food for their animals!? How many people here buy supplements? ( I know i cant make vitamin A out of thin air!?) How many people buy rearing mixes? etc etc
September 26, 200816 yr No one is saying anything like that, I think it was more an IF that a YOU DO... Alot of the time there's cheaper more nutritonal ways to feed your animals than what they say is in those packets, that is all... They may look good in writing but really they aren't all that wonderful... I'd say for breeding birds stick to seed, greensvitamins and egg mixes if you can There's alot of home recipes on this site if you take a look about and in the FAQ's and so on which can help you, if not PM some members who may be able to help and shed some light on better things which cost less
September 26, 200816 yr I think everyone could save a whole lot of money and give more nutritious food if they stick to natural alternative over packet products. Budgie starter is good for fledgling food, but with all the extras thrown in too...thats all
