October 19, 200816 yr Author No chance I am keeping all the babies from my show pairs at least until I have increased my flock numbers a fair bit. I have a pet type crested that I might pair up soon though Edited October 19, 200816 yr by Neat Changed atleast to at least
October 19, 200816 yr well ... WHERE IS THE PICTURE .... Â Â I think that I will tell EVERYONE the minute i ring a chick .... It will be a massive goal for me  .. Â Good luck with them all MB
October 19, 200816 yr Author At the moment s/he still looks like your standard ugly pink chick, once there are some feathers starting I'll take some piccies I promise! At the moment I'm just impatient to see how the pin feathers start to come through on the heads of my crestbred chicks
October 19, 200816 yr Things are looking Good...I am really pleased for you, especially about the first show type babies....can't wait for pictures.
October 20, 200816 yr Author A third chick for the crested pair last night I'd like to commend Pippi who in my dim aviary where the breeding cages are for the moment(as I am still trying to work out how to install my flouro light) actually predicted that one of the eggs was about to hatch
October 20, 200816 yr fantastic news MB... just so you know I also live in melbourne so yeah... umm... not sure if you plan on line breeding but if not feel free to palm some off my way
October 20, 200816 yr Author I will probably breed the crested babies out to normals to increase the size so they won't be going anywhere any time soon, sorry JB
October 20, 200816 yr You don't want a crested lacewing... okay... I guess I won't be able to help you I am a joker arn't I!
October 20, 200816 yr Author Hey I'm open to joint breeding type offers JB but I'm just not planning on sending any of my babies away to new homes if you know what I mean. I'm still really in that 'need to keep my mitts on my good birds' stage. I'd say it wouldn't be that beneficial to breed lacewing in to crested though, they'd look pretty but the major hurdle with crested is keeping the size up and the inos and lacewings wouldn't help with that.
October 20, 200816 yr that is very true MB. You are going for good solid stock so that would be very beneficial to not breed with ino's and the like. I am interested in joint breeding to, but I'd like to breed by myself first. maybe down the track I'll have a hen thats won every show and she'll be ready to retire...
October 25, 200816 yr Author UPDATE  Crested pair: smallest chick died, oldest is definately crested and will be green(as expected), 2nd chick at this stage I suspect not crested but time will tell. These two chicks after my drama the other day are now being raised by my pied pair and I'm hoping the crested hen may ly a second clutch now  Pied pair: Also lost there youngest. oldest chick is showing white on wings which means the cock is split blue!!!, not sure of colour of second one  green show pair: doing a ripper job, they have four chicks and all are looking lovely and healthy, I'm particularly please with the size of the oldest. Not sure if one of these chicks may be the one from the fallow cock that died and his hen, lost track of the egg in the box so I'm not sure if it hatched(two didn't), should be easy to tell though as it would be the only blue chick if it did hatch.  ino pair: last their first lot of eggs after the hen stopped sitting, she has now laid two more and is sitting wellso fingers crossed for a succesful clutch this time around.
October 25, 200816 yr Some good some bad, I am sorry to hear about your losses, thank you for the update MB
October 25, 200816 yr Author It has been a learning experience Elly as this is the first year I have had many pairs breeding at the same time. My main thing that I feel I will do differently next time is to swap chicks where possible to even up the ages as the losses I have had seem to be related to small chicks in nests with much older siblings.
October 25, 200816 yr Very good points, and others on this forum learn too as you share it with everyone too.
October 25, 200816 yr It has been a learning experience Elly as this is the first year I have had many pairs breeding at the same time. My main thing that I feel I will do differently next time is to swap chicks where possible to even up the ages as the losses I have had seem to be related to small chicks in nests with much older siblings. I do this too, where possible. It all helps. A nest I have at the moment with only one chick will also have the chick fostered into another nest so they can begin again. Sometimes it feels like a game of musical chairs but with budgies :party0011:
October 26, 200816 yr Author In a shock turn of events the oldest chick in my green show pairs nest has white pin feathers!!! So by a massive twist of fate they must both be split blue and happened to pass it on to atleast this baby  Both crested and both pied chick plus the two older from the green nest are now rung.  The older crested baby is a scrawny little critter though, the down has come through patchy although the developing pin feathers seem to be even so I'm hoping this is just a weird crested thing with the chicks. His crest looks great now as the pins are just breaking through and it never had any down on its head Shall wait and see how it grows Edited October 26, 200816 yr by melbournebudgies
October 27, 200816 yr Author The second oldest from the green pair is looking like it will be blue too (actually probably grey since dad is a grey green). What's funny is I thought that all the chicks would be green and now it looks like I will have almost all blue series
October 27, 200816 yr Author I have devestating news I got home tonight and my oldest crested chick was dead in the nest box. I have no idea what happened, the other three chicks are well fed and looking fine, they have cean water and food including fresh soft food. I was looking at him last night thinking he was a scrawny thing (I even posted it up there ^ ) but I didn't expect this  When it rains it pours, the smallest of my green clutch is also dead!  I don't understand it, I've never lost a single chick before and now they seem to be dropping all over the place. I'm not doing anything different from the other times I've bred They aren't showing any signs of illness Edited October 27, 200816 yr by melbournebudgies
