Who Hit The Accelerator? - Eggs Everywhere!

Well I went from a couple of pairs withone egg two days ago and now I have three pair with two eggs and one pair with one egg (would have had two but that is Ozzie and he smashed the first one).

I seperated Ozzie away from his hen this morning and about an hour latr she laid her second egg which I took and fostered into one of the other hens nests, so Ozzie is back in with his hen. Once she has laid a few more seperately from him I'll leave him in for one and see what happens but given how important these eggs were I wanted to have a few safe before I risked another one.

Pics:

As they were all in the breeding cages I didn't want to mess with them too much so these are about the best I could do unfortunately

Pair 1:

green spangle full crested(cock) and dark green normal crest bred(hen) (2 eggs, fostering second egg from pair 2)

They aren't all show pairs as I have some people wanting pets so I have a couple of pet pairs going too but that's okay

Spring has sprung for you MB, I look forward to seeing the crested babies and seeing if anything somes out of them , the all look very nice birds you should have some very good looking chicks.

By far my favorite pair is my spangle pair, we just have to hope he's filled the eggs. I know AV wants one of his babies but other than that I'll be keeping them all for the future (and sending one to AV's isn't really sending it away anyway  ) The other one I really want to breed is the crested pair, I am hanging out to take a chick or two to the club show in January (or maybe December depending on how they go)

Hey AV ya there? You cool with the choice I made for Ozzie?

yes I approve, I just love him so much, promise me that if you every want to get rid of him you just dump him in my avairy! :P

  • Author

Don't worry I would never send him away :P He's one of those special ones, lucky for him he's rather beautiful too :D

I'm hoping we'll be able to put one of their chicks on the show bench either at the last club meet this year or the first next year.

I still think he is one of the best free birds we have managed to pick up so should have kept him for myself :P

Don't worry AV, hopefully we'll get some nice bubbas out of him.

On another note have you decided where you are heading with your breeding or still finding your feet?

Think I am going to go greys got another free pair today :P Will take pictures and tell you all about the creepy man that knew nothing! poor girl got her home, gave her a nest box and within 20 mins she layed a soft shelled egg so lots of calvet and cod liver oil for the old girl and we will see how we got but she is sort of ugly! :D

:P Should have guessed. I have a few big grey normal cocks and a grey opaline or two floating around out there so let me know if you want to borrow any, I think they are all cocks though but there might be a hen.

The grey cock I got is an 07 bird I think and really nice she is sort of funny looking and an 05 bird nothing wrong with her just funny looking and I think that the cock has been over preening her as she has a few blad patchs. Will takes lots of pictures tomorrow of ugly for you!

Hey any birds you want to send my way... oh wait hold on I think i am out of room for a while! :P

Well candled eggs today and I'm sorry AV but so far the news ain't good for Ozzie, all clear at this stage :D

In the other boxes the older of the eggs are showing veins in the crested nest, pair 3 and the pied nest. The inos haven't laid yet but the hen is only just now settling in the nest box so hopefully we'll have eggs in a few days. The hen that lost her cock(the fallow) laid a single egg after she lost her man but hasn't laid since, she was in the box tonight though so I'll see tomorrow. Her first egg has been fostered in with pair 3 at this stage and I shall hope to see veins in a few days :laughter:

Ozzie and his hen are getting a bit more of a bikini wax tomorrow after she lays her next egg :)

  • Author

CHICKS UPDATE!

3 hatched today! One to pair 3 the green pair, one to the crested pair and one to the pied pair

The silly ino hen isn't sitting well and the eggs were cold again when I checked them this arvo and not fertile so I've removed them to try and encourage her to lay again, might foster the first couple she lays under another hen if she doesn't look like she will sit well again. Ozzie who lost his hen is thankfully showing no signs of canker so in another two weeks if he is still healthy then I will start thinking about a new hen for him. The egg from the fallow cock who died is still looking good and will hopefully hatch in the next few days, his hen is sitting on three other eggs, none look fertile at this stage.

Interesting to see the crested baby and the one from the fallow male that passed on, thank you for the update.

  • Author

Yes well I will have to hope for crested babies, the cock is crested the hen is crest bred and they have four other eggs still to hatch so hopefully there will be some crested babies amongst them. Not expecting any fallow babies as the hen isn't fallow. She is a dilute skyblue and he was a skyblue fallow

Busy, busy hey MB. Good luck and keep those updates coming! :bump:

Rung my first chick this morning!!! Then I rung him again after lunch  It seems to have stayed on the second time  It's a huge chick though, the egg was large and even new born it seemed larger than it's clutch mates, it's only 5 days old and it's already got it's bracelet

I didn't realise how excited I would be ringing my first show chick!! It's a great feeling to know that very soon I may have a contender or two for the UBC class at the club show

The first chick is from this pair:

They have four chicks total at the moment, still a couple of eggs left

My crested pair have two chicks and two eggs and my pied pair have two chicks
