Posted September 25, 200816 yr hey all i have a hen that is somewhere between 2 and 3 years old whose feathers have not been in great condition for some time now. I have tried seperating her from the others, changing her diet, keeping her in a quite place and treated her for mites. Her feathers look like they are wet and frizzy but it does not apply to all her feathers just some on the outside. Any ideas on what it could be?
September 25, 200816 yr There could be a few reasons why? Perches? are they too close to the wire? Is she molting? Would need a photo to be able to try and help
September 25, 200816 yr Was she like this when you got her ? Could be a french moult survivor. Sounds like it, but photos will help.
September 25, 200816 yr Author Neat - i dont think she is moulting unless she has been able to moult continuously for the last couple of months Kaz - definately not like this when i got her a few years ago Edited September 25, 200816 yr by **Liv** removed broken images

September 26, 200816 yr French Moult only affects budgies under 5 weeks old so if she was not like that when she was young it can’t be French moult. You can tell be the way she is standing that she is sick. Has she been treated for worms? There are several diseases that it could be but it would need a vet to diagnose which.
September 28, 200816 yr Author Yet to see a vet i thought that i would try and avoid it if possible. Thanks for your input guys
September 28, 200816 yr She doesn't look right - I was leading towards the FM as there are a few FM birds I have seen that don't have twisted feathers and etc but look scruffy and etc - But if she has been like this for a while, you are better off getting her checked by an AVIAN vet mate ..... Let us know the outcome best of luck ...
September 28, 200816 yr Yet to see a vet i thought that i would try and avoid it if possible. If you decide not to take her to a vet then she needs to be isolated from your other birds and treated for worms as they are the most common cause of unthriftiness in birds. The state of her feathers is a because she is ill, they are not the cause of her illness. Is it possible that her problem is old age? Sometimes age symptoms can appear quite quickly
September 30, 200816 yr Author I have already isolated her from the rest and as we speak am treating her for worms. I'll let you all know how it comes along
September 30, 200816 yr I agree with Neville it might be an old age thing. But as the other have said get her checked by a Avairn vet and go from there. Best of luck keep us updated.
October 2, 200816 yr hey all i have a hen that is somewhere between 2 and 3 years old whose feathers have not been in great condition for some time now. I have tried seperating her from the others, changing her diet, keeping her in a quite place and treated her for mites. Her feathers look like they are wet and frizzy but it does not apply to all her feathers just some on the outside. Any ideas on what it could be? Is she overgrooming herself...i.e. very actively preening all the time ? What mites have you checked her for and what treatment did you use ? October 7, 200816 yr Author Hey all just an update on my sick bird unfortunately she lost her battle and quietly passed away during the night. I did everything i could to make it better for her but she took a real turn for the worst. At least i know she isn't in any pain. Thanks for all your advice and the article that you posted Kaz by Liv it gave a few different ideas but as i had never dealt with anything like it before it was hard for me to tell. Thanks again guys
