Posted March 17, 200520 yr Hi everyone. I have a 6 month old budgie called toby. he's usually very outgoing and very vocal. however on monday i noticed that he wasnt making any noise or showing interest in his toys (VERY out of character). he came out of the cage but instead of playing he just sat there all fluffed up with his eyes closed. last night i put his cage in our spare room where it's darker, warmer and quieter. Then i noticed he was making funny breathing noises. he doesnt seem to be eating much. im taking him to the vet tonight but i am so worried about him
March 17, 200520 yr Greetings Sorry to hear your bird is not well but at least you did the right thing and have taken him to the vet He should give him some antibiotics and all you can do is keep him warm and a little TLC Well I hope your bird gets well and all the best
March 17, 200520 yr I can only second what Hommer has said, but please let us know how your little bird gets on and keep us updated? Very best wishes for a speedy recovery for your bird, Anne
March 17, 200520 yr Thanks for your messages. The vet couldn't say exactly what was wrong, but she did give me some antibiotics to put in his water. He has started getting this frothy stuff like spit coming out of his beak and the breathing noises are worse. I don't think he's going to last much longer
March 18, 200520 yr im at work at the moment so am worried how he'll be when i get home. another thing ive noticed about him is that he's always trying to scratch his butt with his foot and is always rubbing his head on things. he always tries to put his butt in the water bowl. i read today that frothing of the beak can be a symptom of poisoning......maybe he ate something bad when he was out of his cage. i cant think what it would have been though. hum
March 18, 200520 yr I would take the bird back to the vet if its not better maybe the vet missed something. If you have any indoor plants look on the net and see if there are any that are poisonous Poor little thing hope your bird gets better soon
March 18, 200520 yr Thanks for your messages. The vet couldn't say exactly what was wrong, but she did give me some antibiotics to put in his water. He has started getting this frothy stuff like spit coming out of his beak and the breathing noises are worse. I don't think he's going to last much longer <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'm sorry to hear that. Breathing noises usually indicate a respiratory infection of some kind, but I'm not sure about the frothy discharge. But definitely check what he may have gotten into (plants, candles, etc.) If at all possible, see if you can get antibiotics you administer orally. Unfortunately, a lot of times if the birds think something is odd or "off" about the water - either color or smell - they won't drink it. Adding anything to the water also increases the chances that unwanted bacteria will grow in it. Oral or injectable medicines are much better. You control the dosage and are sure they are getting the medicine. Let us know what happens, please.
March 20, 200520 yr hi all. unfortunately my poor little budgie was dead when i came home on friday afternoon. it was very upsetting to come home to. it was especially hard to clean out his cage afterwards and take out all his favourite toys. i wish i could have done more to help him while he was sick. thanks to everyone for your kind comments and advice.
March 21, 200520 yr I am really sorry about your loss. The sad thing is that budgies hide their illness until it's usually too late. I'm sure there was nothing else you could do.
March 21, 200520 yr I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm sure you must be devastated. Please know we all understand.
March 21, 200520 yr :bluebudgie: Poor thing I?m so sorry to hear the bad news were all so sorry You must feel so sad
March 21, 200520 yr I feel a bit better than I did but I really miss him. I keep expecting to hear him whistle at me when I walk into the room. It's great to talk to other budgie owners who understand how I feel. Thanks everyone
March 21, 200520 yr awwww. your messages made me sad and i was really hoing that your budge budge would get better. Do you think you will get another one? Its really quiet without one isn't it?
March 21, 200520 yr I'd like to get another one but not for a little while. It sure is quiet without him....he knew a couple of different whistles and was always calling out whenever I got home or uncovered his cage in the morning. He was really cheeky :bluebudgie:
March 21, 200520 yr have you got any photos of him? I know what you mean. When i lost my rocky1 i missed him more than i thought i would. The house seemed do quiet without him.
March 21, 200520 yr what a beauty. He is similar to my rocky. i hope you feel better soon. i would say get another budgie because you obviously enjoyed him and loved him very much.
March 28, 200520 yr Hi everyone, I just wanted to let you know that I got a new budgie on the weekend. He's a baby, and is light blue with a yellow head, yellow wings and grey markings on his wings (Bea, he looks a lot like your budgie Blinkie). I've had him for two days and so far he's hardly made a sound or moved about his cage. I guess he's just nervous! His cere is a lavender colour which is a lighter pink around the nostrils. I am hoping the pet shop got it right and gave me a male! It's really nice to have a budgie around again although I still miss my old one
March 29, 200520 yr I'm so glad that you decided to get a little baby budgie!!! It looks like Blinkie you say??? Can you post a picture????
