Posted September 24, 200816 yr I've read on some sites that you shouldnt tame a budgie that you plan to show. I was wondering if this was true? And if not, is there any specific way to tame/train a show budgie? Thanks
September 24, 200816 yr I don't know about not taming them I really don't see why not but in our FAQ section we have a very extensive section on Show Budgies. Here is what they say about training them for show. How do you teach the birds to stand in the position for the judges? Training for the show cage begins a few weeks after fledging. Most cockbirds will "show" as it is part of their nature to show off and blow their head feathers forward. Hens of a show type also know when to "show" as training in the show cage has prepared them for staying on the perch at least for a time. A judge will give a bird an amount of time to "show" and any bird that wont stay on the perch for showing purposes cannot be judged. However judges give the birds some encouragement to get back up on their perch for showing by use of a small baton like stick and various other tricks to encourage a restless bird to perch.
September 24, 200816 yr Yes you do have to train your Budgie put them in a show cage as much as possible you just need them to settle.I have taken them to work to get use to people walking past the cage and at home.I use to start with a show cage connect to another holding cage so they could go in and out and get use to the show cage.Plus the judge stick (If they stii use them)another thing they have to be ready for. September 24, 200816 yr You are looking in the wrong section of our forum for the show budgie answers. We have a whole area on show budgies with many articles in it .................... Here http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index.php?showforum=73 One of the best show budgies at the last Nationals was a tame bird. Whether the bird in the show cage is tame or not doesnt matter as they are never taken out of their show cage during that time, the main point is if they "show" when the judges are looking at them. *** I have just moved your topic into the Show Budgie general discussion section as it was posted in the wrong section. September 25, 200816 yr I was discussing this with some people at our club a couple of months ago, we came to the conclusion that a tame show bird was potentially better as they would be more likely to relax at a show with lots of people around and not freak out and jump around the cage, just our opinions though.
September 25, 200816 yr I know with mine (as I am small time and will only have a few) that I will not hand tame them but try and handled them and put them in show cages every day so that they get use to them. I know some show birds who are really tame not fromtheir owners trying but more from them being handled so much.
September 25, 200816 yr Author I think I might just get her used to people so she's not jumpy. Thanks for all the great advice!!!
