the colour doesnt look right where it stops at the neck.

It looks like a girl but opaline dom pieds can be either. I just got a male op dom pied from a female opaline dom pied!! Lol

What is it about the photo that makes it look altered?

They are never that depth of dark royal / navy blue between the wings ...you can see the added colour by photoshop or similar program

The babies are looking great.

I agree that budgie photo has been altered.

This is a picture of mine so you can see the difference, photo hasn't captured the true color she is darker in real life and currently sitting on 7 eggs.

I can't help you at all with genetics.. but I just have to say... that is the cutest thing i've EVER seen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've never seen a baby bird before, but thats extremely cute seeing the stages of its growth :huh:
