Posted September 24, 200816 yr I have the chance to purchase one or more of these birds but I was hoping others might give me opinions before I decide. Excuse the fact that they are all moulting at the moment, not alot to be done about that These birds are between $30-40 each 1. TCB cock 2. Opaline cock 1 3. Opaline cock 2
September 24, 200816 yr Number three has a short mask BUT he IS a sky violet and worthwhile adding to breeding stock if not for show breeding
September 24, 200816 yr I would have said two as well one is cute but I think two would be the better show bird
September 24, 200816 yr Author Here are the reasons these three jumped out at me : 1. He's a TCB which is something I've always wanted but I'll resist the urge if he's not worth the $ from a show breeding perspective 2. He jumped out at me as having show breeding potential 3. He just had this gorgeous 'presence' about him
September 24, 200816 yr Author I very nearly did on the spot Libby, but the reality is I don't have the space or the money to be purchasing birds just cause I'm a sucker
September 24, 200816 yr From a purely monetary standpoint......number two is worth the money. The other two are worth $20 each....no more.
September 24, 200816 yr hehe aww I do LOL I'm a sucker for a pretty birdy I had alot of losses of older pet birds over the winter so now have a bit more space which means more purchases for me and even more when I do a cull LOL!
September 24, 200816 yr Author Hmmm... well number two will come home with me then, if he will give him to me a little cheaper I might take number three but we'll see
September 24, 200816 yr YES totally agree with Opaline Cock 2. Which is good means my eye is getting better Edited September 24, 200816 yr by KAZ typo....wrong bird
September 24, 200816 yr In my experience you wont normally get such good qualities in a TCB as not so many are breeding them, if you like the mutation you have to do some work yourself in breeding up the quality. I agree that number 2 is a nice bird, & agree with Kaz that no3 hasn’t such a deep mask, but his blow, from the top of his cere to the top of his head is better in my opinion, they look like they could be brothers, so may have similar genes.
September 24, 200816 yr Author So Norm are you saying that they may all be worth it? It isn't easy to get a hold of TCBs . I can check if the ring numbers are close on the two opalines but they are from someone who is deceased so records are a little patchy at the mment.
September 24, 200816 yr Hi I find to have a good look at the bird is very hard by the photo. If possible try and get them in a show cage then take a photo I know this is hard but in the long run you will get better birds. Steve P.S.I'd buy the TCB just because I like them.
September 25, 200816 yr If you have the money take all three but try bargaining the price for them. My suggestion was just down to WHICH ONE, but if you like them all ...take them all.
September 25, 200816 yr Author Ummm those photos were taken in a show cage I'm going to take the middle one and probably the last one but I think I'll leave the TCB for the moment. I'll talk $ with him
September 25, 200816 yr I'd have taken the TCB Not only because of their rarity, but his body is nice and clear, you can barely see the blue suffision it and I think you'd be able to improve his genes with other birds very easily even if he's not that great right now.
September 25, 200816 yr All that Tcb is lacking is large spots which make him lack that eyegrabbing thing that show birds have, if you overlook the spots he is not too bad for a clearbody- or at least a good starting point if you like that type. I wouldnt say his mask was long but it isnt bad- a bit pinched in around the face but not too bad. The others look alot better as they are opalines- so more feather bigger spots, opalines always look good- even the crappier ones!! If I was planning on playing around with clearbodies for a while Id give him a go. Number 3 isnt too bad but he looks like a penguin on the perch Id have a look at a breeders stock before I rushed out and got him. Edited September 25, 200816 yr by the pie
September 25, 200816 yr Author Oh god Pie, he does look like a penguin Hmmm now I'm leaning towards the TCB again...
September 25, 200816 yr HI I like number 1 best. But that is just my personal opinion and I am not a show breeder. Good luck with who ever you choose.
September 25, 200816 yr I am just learning to MB, But i go by this rule Does it have more fault them qualities? And I go by 60% visual you never know what the gene pool will bring out They may look like Stock birds, but their babies could turn out to be a Bird that is good enough to show. I agree with the TCB with it's spots they ( out of the 3 ) are better - The Cobalt feathers look course But could be a good trait for a Stock bird Pinched heads are hard to breed out of the gene But if you pair these correctly you could very well have a great out come Just my thoughts :budgiedance:
September 25, 200816 yr I loooooove number 2 Good luck with your tough choices. Make sure they are healthy as i see some old stains in their feathers
September 25, 200816 yr The choice is ultimately up to you, depending on what you want, space & what you want to spend at the time. But as others have said, if they come from good stock, you will probably be getting a good gene pool & even if birds aren’t show beaters themselves they could produce far better birds than themselves. That’s if your lucky, quite a few good looking birds I have bought ended up not breeding…so it’s all a gamble.
