Posted September 23, 200816 yr Well I saw George and Lumina my normal green pair mate two days ago and one day later Lumina had a big butt and I was worried she was eggbound. Then the next day nothing but then at about 7ish 8ish I checked and there she was sat on a little egg. Tommorow I should have egg number two, I dont think any will be fertile has it is both of there's first time. But just having eggs is good for me and having babies would be exalent. And right now I'm defrosting peas and brocoli for George and Lumina too eat, Also Lumina Only comes out too eat, poop and stretch and theres only one egg. Now for some annoying questions..... 1.How many eggs do they usally lay? 2.Because my other female budgie is going in her nest box does that meen I can foster Lumina's eggs if she has to many, or is that only if my other female has egg too? 3.How many days untill they stop laying? 4.Is it normal for a hen to sit on the egg constatly if there is just one? 5.Is it normal for a hen to not let her male in the box when there is an egg?
September 23, 200816 yr I will answer what I know 1. Usually between 5 and 7 is an average number 2. Not sure about this, but personally I would only foster to another hen who already has an egg 3. That would depend on how many eggs they lay. They usually lay (on average) one egg every 2nd day until they are done 4. Yes, some hens will start sitting straight away and not come out much after an egg has been laid 5. Most of my hens are happy for the cock to come in the nesting box, but that usually happens more after the chicks have hatched I have found. I am sure if any advice I have given is incorrect, someone will correct me and let you know and I will learn too
September 23, 200816 yr Agree with all Sunnie has said, personally I would remove the other hen as she may start causing problems.

You will have losses of eggs and chicks if you leave it this way does that meen I can foster Lumina's eggs if she has to many, you can only foster to a hen that already has eggs or is that only if my other female has egg too? you cannot foster to a hen that has no eggs 3.How many days untill they stop laying? when she has decided she has the perfect size clutch of eggs for her 4.Is it normal for a hen to sit on the egg constatly if there is just one? it may seem like she is but sometimes they just sit while waiting to lay the next egg. SOME hens sit from the beginning but usually they wait for a few more eggs 5.Is it normal for a hen to not let her male in the box when there is an egg? depends on the hen...some get paranoid about it and others dont Edited September 23, 200816 yr by KAZ
September 23, 200816 yr Author Thanks Kaz I have two females between two cages not in the same so you dont have to worry about that, and Lumina's more of the bossy stuborn but caring type and when I went it to check on them(not look in the box) but to see if she was in or out and then George came out the box and Lumina didnt come up but she was in it so she does let him in
September 23, 200816 yr We all misunderstood what you were saying Jodie. You meant that you have a hen in another cage witha nest box that is going into her own box not that she was going into Lumina's box, is that right?
September 23, 200816 yr Hey Matey - O - Things are sounding good - I am so please that she has now laid you were getting a little concerned But i did the same thing when I started ( freaking out, Unsure, forgetting things : D ) I am glad that I learnt what I did - Best of luck mate. The other members have answered your questions so I will just add the above
September 23, 200816 yr Yeah I have been talking with Jodie for a long while now - She reminds me of me when i first started out :D ....
September 24, 200816 yr Author She laid another 1 today, and is sat on them since the first one was laid

September 24, 200816 yr Congrats Jodie, I was nervous my first time breeding to .... Just remember plenty of good food for the parents
September 25, 200816 yr Author Hi she still has two eggs and she hardly moves off them and she very protective of them, and my main worry is that George is forever trying to mate with her but she doesn't want too , but hes the one feeding her and taking care of her. And just three questions 1. Lumina's cere is a light tan colour is that breeding condition? because at first I thought damn I shouldn't have put the box on. 2.Is there anyway by telling of the colour of the if its fertile? 3.How do I clean there cage or do I leave it?
September 25, 200816 yr My personal preference is that umless absolutely necessary I don't clean cages while they are on eggs, it's not a risk I'll take if at all possible. The best bet is to candle the eggs. If you can get a little LED torch (impotant that it's a LED as a normal globe will get hot and may cook the egg) from a discount shop that will work fine. Once the eggs are about 4 days old you should be able to see little red viens running through them

September 25, 200816 yr No, not really until they actually start to grow although if it was a noticeably strange looking egg then it would probaby be infertile but a normal egg you will need to be patient for a coupl more days
September 26, 200816 yr Author No, not really until they actually start to grow although if it was a noticeably strange looking egg then it would probaby be infertile but a normal egg you will need to be patient for a coupl more days they look the same nothing strange about them, also George and Lumina mated again today does that mean theres a higher chance of fertile eggs?
