Yawning/gasping?

Both budgies that I have had at random times have diplayed this behaviour. Its like they are taking a very long yawn, but then repead it a few time in a row. It looks like he is trying to open his wind pipe or he has something stuck in his throught. But he doesnt. Like i am sitting here and birdo is just settling down into bed and he does it. Sometimes it will be in the middle of the day!? I dont get it. I presume this happens to others too.

ALSO

Ive had Rook for a few weeks now and he just will not come out of his cage! To get him out I have to corner him (well not corner but he will walk to the far end of the perch), and touch his tummie before he steps up. But he will try and jump off my finger on the way out. He isnt scared of our hands or anything, its like he is just so scared of coming out of his cage. When we can get him out (if he hasnt jumped back onto the perch already), he is so focused on the cage and wont really settle outside of his cage.

When we talk to him he is always blinking at us and stuff and seems to enjoy it when we talk to him. And he will jump on our fingers or out of the cage if we have millet, otherwise he just doesnt want to budge from his cage. My last bird was desperate to get out of his cage and spend time with us.

How can i get him to love us and want to be near us. I just feel like he is never going to bond with us...

Thanks in advance!

Jessie

Question 1) All my birds do it every now and then too - It normally happens during preening and personally i think it happens because they have something caught in their thoat - like a little bit of feather or feather sheath etc

Question 2) When you take him out of his cage, cover it up or move it out of the room - out of sight, out of mind and he will be a lot happier with you :)

The problem i have with moving the cage is that he should choose the us OVER the cage. If we move his cage he has no choice but to be with us and thats not something I wanna teach him.... Does this make sense??? So i dont know what to do

Many budgies are attached to their cage, it is their home after all. Taking him well away from his cage while out allows him to focus on you rather than his cage - he will become more bonded to you in time too

You want him to have that as a choice only you, it sounds cruel but it is not, you are gently forcing him to trust you just as much as he trusts his cage. I had to do this with Pretty or I would have gotten no where with him. Everytime I had him out I covered or moved his cage it worked like a charm within 2 weeks he was okay and realized that it is okay to be with me and he can always go back home. Right now if you don't do it you are enabling the fear he has of you.

Okay, so i have tried the sheet over the cage thing, but he jumps off us and runs underneith the table!

How do you get your budgie to want to be with you?

Lots of time and patience :(

He will come around, just keep being with him

Bribes!!!!!

Only offer him his favorite things when he is on your hand or shoulder. My tame budgie is a sucker for carrot so that's what he gets when he goes whereI want him to. If yours loves millet then don't put it in the cage only offer it when he is with you.

MB is right food is awesome and his favorite toy when he is only out with you, if your cage is smaller and mobile have him by you at all times and talk to them. It took Pretty up to 6 months to show any interest of wanting to me with me. All budgies are individuals, have you read my taming article in the FAQ's?
