I have a cock who is nearly four years old. Having just posted a picture of him in the other thread it's occrred to me that he doesn't have iris rings, is this common in normals?

 

Sometimes they're hard to see, have you got any photo's of him with his eye in direct light so there's no chance of his pupil being dilated to the point of not being able to see the iris?

no, nothing to suggest pied floating around in there. Other than those eyes he really loks like your stock standard green normal budgie. I kinda like the eyes though, makes him look babyish

 

I was about to pair him with a dom pied and I don't think I have a recessive pied (unless AV has one of mine), any other suggestion what I should pair him with?

 

 

 

Aha!!!! I think I have gotten to the bottom of it (although I think he hates me now ) I shined a really broght light on him and I can just see the faintest white ring then around the very edge of his eye, so maybe he just has a really thin ring that is not visible until he is in unusually high light conditions :shrug:

There are always exceptions to every rule. I have a double factor spangle that is showing no iris ring but I know that her mutation is right because it has been proven by breeding. I have heard of several other cases where the iris ring hasn't developed the way it is expected. Actually all budgies have iris rings but in some mutations they are the same colour as their eyes so we can't see them

MB i was about to say shine a light in his eyes as they dilate then

The poor little guy, I had to shine that light on him for about 5 minutes while I tried to get him to stay still so I could look. Even with the light I could only barely see them, sothin I wasn't sure if I was imagining things.
