Posted September 21, 200816 yr Hey guys, my friend wants some urgent help and advice with her sick baby boy. oh girls it's heartbreaking..it's all I can think about...the little fella has a respiratory problem and I just don't know what else to do. I'm nearly in tears just thinking about it. He's been to the vet and is on antibiotics and vitamin drops, but you can see he's having trouble breathing and he's fluffling very easily. He's also lost weight in the ... last few days which makes me feel sick. I have him in an empty room upstairs that gets really warm during the day, plus he has a heater right beside his cage. I've started hanging my wet washing in there too, to get the humidity up to help him breathe easier. He still won't try any other foods so I'm worried about his diet...and I know that budgies mimic health, so that also means I don't know how bad he is...Any advice at all...I just want him to be healthy...gosh now I am crying, I just feel so bad for the little guy. Any help would be great! thanks xoxoxo Edited September 21, 200816 yr by KAZ
September 21, 200816 yr Keeping him warm is the most important thing. Cover the cage from 3 sides and place a lamp about a 60 watt next to the cage. He needs to see the vet again. I am hoping that some more experinced guys can assist some more here. Good luck.
September 21, 200816 yr If he has been on antibiotics for a least 48 hrs and there is no improvement as Ikon says he does need to see the vet again. My question to your friend has she seen an avian vet or a vet that usually sees dogs and cats, there is a big difference in knowledge so I would make sure you are going back to the avian vet. As Ikon said keep him very warm at least 75F -80F in constant temperature you will be amazed what warmth can do. Is the bird eating if not you may have to feed it and make sure it is getting fluids. Look at the poos what do they look like are they white and sloppy that indicates no eating if they are black with no white that indicates no drinking. Let us know.
September 21, 200816 yr Hey Jwancia I am sorry to hear about your freinds bird, like the others suggested keeps him warm and quiet till you can get him to the vet, I had the same problem last week, Hardy had to have 2 antibiotic shots and is doing well but I had to hand feed him for a few days, he lost 14grams (luckly he had it to spare), my vet gave me a product called First Aid, a powder that you mix with water and syringe feed, (my vet was unable to give me a crop feeding lesson) but this product helped till he felt better and started eating on his own, you could use egg and biscuit mix made in to a sloppy paste, till you can get to the vet. I hope this helps and he gets better soon.
September 21, 200816 yr respiratory infection and what I'm about to say are totally different and I'm no vet- but I have had a bird with what I thought was a res. problem, trouble breathing/wheezing, tail bobbing, fluffed it turned out to be an iodine deficiency cured with a drop or 2 of betadine/iodine in his drinking water. In saying that I do think your friends bird needs to see the vet again he doesnt sound good- maybe a different antibiotic, what is he on at the moment?
September 21, 200816 yr Author Thank you all soo much for the fast reply! Ill pass this all onto Renae. Cross Fingers!
September 21, 200816 yr Can I suggest sending a PM to member 'Angelic Vampyre'. She is located in the Burwood area and has an EXCELLENT avian vet who is well worth travelling over that way for if Renae can get there
September 21, 200816 yr If the antibiotic is given in the water than it wont help as effectively as when its given via injection.
