To Show Or Not To Show?

I am considering the prospect of showing budgies. I am absolutley set in the idea of breeding colours and mutations that I find intersting, but I am not sure that I want to get involved in showing budgies as I dont know if it is for me. To be perfectly honest, I am not unsure that what I have seen as show qaulity are attractive birds.

I have two young kids 2 and 9 Months and work a very busy job that keeps me at work most of the day. Therefore I do not have a lot of time on a daily basis to share.

How much time each day do I need to spend in developing my budgies to show standard? How does this differ from being a recreational breeder in the backyard?

Are budgie clubs just a boys clubs who promote the in crowd or do they work differently?

Any advice or experience that that you can offer is greatly appreciated?

I spend about half an hour to an hour a day with my birds, thats mainly just feeding them giving greens ect.

If you already breed budgies i would say it would be much the same as what you do now.

In my club we meet every second month and have a couple of shows a year and there are quite a few females in the club as well.

You might just find yourself spending a little more time in the bird room looking at different birds in a show box from time to time.

matt.

Which birds do you prefer? I think this determines which way you will go- whether you like breeding for colours or breeding for a certain type. Money, time, space and numbers of birds you can keep are different factors also.

You will be welcome to contact a club near you, go to a meeting/show and have a look at the birds and have a chat to the people. You will find both men and women and usually willing to help a newby out.

Ahhh Catintheht - I have just started my journey into the show world ( bought 2 :D)

But i am serious about breeding them and hopefully having the right amount of features to be able to get to the bench

Budgie clubs aren't just boy clubs LOL they have us girls in them too :hap: :hap: :hap: IT is a great way to gain information and get a feel for that side of the hobby

I agree with what you say about some of the show budgies not attractive - but once you start learning about why they breed them and how to breed good quality you soo stop seeing the bird as a mutation and colour you see it as size ...

Size in the head, body and Feather ...

( wow I have learnt thing :) )

There are clubs in NSW that welcome new members or people that would like a sticky beak :hap:

Here --->is the link for BUDGIE CLUBS IN NSW I am sure there will be something that is close enough for you ;)

Good luck and Enjoy ...

YOU not U ...U is an unapproved shortcut

Hi catintheht,If you enjoy colours forget Show birds but if you want to get into show bird you need patients a mentor would help but keep your money in your pocket till you know a good bird then start to purchase a few pairs. All clubs have good and bad member but that's in all hobbies & sports I was in it for about 5 years I found that 98% breeder would help if not give you birds to help.I only left because I couldn't put the time & money to improve so I just faded out. I have just started with a few pair again because I miss the sound in the backyard.
