So my bird is back from hospital and she seems back to her normal self except she's rubbing her behind on her perch like a nut while hanging off her mirror :budgiedance: The vet has treated her for worms as well and Ive had to remove the mirror as she's going crazy with it ( was this the right thing to do ? ) She's alway's liked her mirror but sometimes get obsessed with it , but what's with the rubbing the backside thing ? Worms ??? Looking at her now since removing the mirror the backside rubbing seems to have ceased . Any clue's ?

IS she in breeding condition? How long ago did the vet treat for worms?

Are you sure this so called "backside rubbing" isnt her mating with the inanimate object ??????

She was treated for worms three day's ago , I just spoke with the vet he said sound's like a sexual thing and try taking the mirror out or covering for an hour , I did take the mirror out for a while boy did I get some bites from her :P She's going very well so I'm glad and going back in for a check up next week .

Cheers

That is what I was leading towards :) hehehe I had a boy that had a "favourite" perch LOL :P

I agree with Neat and Kaz and the vet it probably is more of a sexual thing, we advise no mirrors or reflective objects in cages now a days because they view it as another budgie and they can become obessived and possive about such toys.

Ive been removing the mirror for a short period ( 1 hr ) and her behavior settle's - good .

Been noticing of a morning lately her eaten seed husk's from overnight look darker almost like there's been moisture mixed with em but there not stuck together in a clump or anything or seem to have dropping's in them . Is there a chance she's doing something here with em ?

Cheers

I dont know about the darker husks, but personally i would remove the mirror completely and not give it back.

Where is her seed dish situated in relationship to where she perches ?

I agree completely take out the mirror not just for an hour or only let her have it during play time when she is out. As for the other question not sure, like Kaz said where is the water dish :D

Her seed dish is on the lower perch level and her water is on the top as she sleeps on the top perch and I figured would be good for the water near by during the night ? She maybe splashing some water around during the night ?

Her seed dish is not really in the firing range of the dropping unless she's facing around the other way now , I will keep an eye on it .

She's going well I just have to try and keep her weight down to where it is now , she's flying and climbing around much better now .

She looked like she had a bit of a relapse yesterday but's she's been real well today super active & super friendly and her droppings better .

Cheers

Does she have access to a warm lamp ? My kindie cage has a warm lamp so they can use it if they feel off colour and also some who suffer a hard moult get the benefit of the kindie cage too and its lamp.

I agree with the episode I had with Merlin I believe the warmth was part of his recovery and I still have it quite warm because he is going through a heavy molt because of being sick. Keep it nice and warm for at least a week.

She did have a heat lamp , Ive now upgraded to the convection room heater ( $300 ) with a built inn thermostat and a digital temp gauge on her cage :D keep the room at 20 - 23 deg C . It's been a great help here over winter .

She's still doing well and she's got just one more day on the medicine . :)

I woke this morning to look in my birds cage and to feed etc before heading off to work only to find A MOUNTAIN of Droppings from overnight . As I'm trying to keep her weight down I weighed her again this morning and she's put on 4 grams since returning from hospital and is now 55 Grams . Pretty much what ever I put inn her dish she will eat , so how much seed is enough or not enough ? The mountain of droppings I noticed in the morning came from 3 tea spoon's of seed that I put inn her dish the night before in which she ate the whole lot . Tonight Ive cut that back to two tea spoons .

I asked the vet nurse a while ago , the only suggestion they made was cut back to an amount where they hold there weight but not gain . I have a feeling with my bird that could be as little as two tea spoons a day but dosn't seem enough .

The vet has been pushing for the pellet diet but my bird just won't take to it .

Suggestions ?

She hasnt got anything in her cage that she would think is a good place to lay eggs has she ?? Reason I ask is she is mating with the mirror who she thinks is a "significant other" and she is doing large poops which they do prior to laying eggs :)

No nothing in her cage apart from toy's perch's feed & water , noticed her rubbing her bottom on the perch again tonight as well , the mirror is back in there . I noticed her holding one leg up too never seen that before ? She did have feet problems and her perch's were wrapped for a long time but Ive recently removed the bandaging due to her feet looking better , I have installed a thicker perch for her main top one so she can rest her belly on it to sleep .

She's due to see the vet this week as a follow up and a re test of her droppings .

Cheers .

ooooo Kaz . GREAT POINT!!!!

Toohp have you got a picture of the poo ..

Is it normal looking ( tiny and etc or HUGE )

I noticed her holding one leg up too never seen that before ? A sign of a hen trying to pass an egg and having trouble doing so. Check for lump in vent area.

okay I'll post some pics tomorrow , I had sheet's of white paper in the bottom so I could see exactly what the droppings looked like and today I removed the one with the large poop's on to see what the new one's were like . Anyway the large one's looked okay as in fairly firm large dark green & white .

okay ......., she's actually got three toys with mirrors :D a spinning one which she just loves to show me her spinning it , one with a yellow bird and bell in which she rings when she want's attention and the main culprit ( larger )which has a step on it in which she sit's on while pecking at the mirror , this is the one were she hangs on too while rubbing her behind on the perch .

She also has a rope bell too which she loves to use , really get's stuck into that one when she want's attention , rings it then runs over to the side of the cage to see me . :D

Cheers

Rather then removing the toys just remove the bells of them

OMG Hold up are they copper bells ?

  • Author

One copper bell , the other is like a gold zinc plated one below the yellow plastic bird in which she strikes the bird to make that ring . Copper no good ? It's inside a tassle rope so she pulls on the end of the rope to make it ring .

Let your vet know when you go for your check up ..

They can get poisoned from them ...
