Posted September 15, 200816 yr I bought a large cube of compressed pine shavings today from the fodder store. Its about 10kg and now i am wondering how to store it as it will take me AGES to use it and when i open it it will expand out heaps - shame they didn't sell it in smaller sizes How do you keep your pine shavings clean and dry???
September 15, 200816 yr You can get large white plastic buckets with lids, or just put it in a large plastic bag. If fume-y ( strong smelling ) you need to air it for quite a while to take the smell out.
September 15, 200816 yr thanks for this topic I have been looking at mine for a week trying to work out what to do with it
September 15, 200816 yr Author Would a plastic rubbish bin with lid be okay or will it need to be air tight?? I will open it up tomorrow and air some out ready to put in the boxes

September 15, 200816 yr Actually it' better if it' not air tight as it decreae the chance of it getting mould problem and also allows it to breathe a little

September 15, 200816 yr Also if you make a little fabric bag and fill it ith rice and put it in the bottom of the bin before you fill it up it will absorb any small amount of moisture/humidity that does make it into in the bottom of the bin
September 15, 200816 yr A certain amount of moisture and humidity is necessary in nesting materials. Fumes from excessive pine fumes are not. Edited September 15, 200816 yr by KAZ
September 15, 200816 yr But I have found that things stored in the plastic bins can get mould in the bottom of the bin which can cause more problems as the mould spores get through the whole bin. Personally I would prefer to keep the shavings as dry as possible and then maybe give them a light mist of water before using them in the nest box. Just me though
September 16, 200816 yr MB what a fantastic idea!!! I don't have this problem as I only buy the 2 kg wood shavings and I keep them in the bag opened
September 16, 200816 yr The same can be done with any dry product. So if you have anything that you keep in a container and use slowly like egg and biscuit or handrearing mix a small cloth bag of rice in the bottom will keep the mixture nice and dry.
