hi i don't know if its just bad luck or i'm missing something but my budgies have never bred. i have a pair that i've probably have had for 2-3 years, once in a blue moon i have seen her in the nesting box and the male bobs his head at her and i've seen him feed her but no little chicks. why is this? i've done my research about breeding and believe to be on the right track but i'm not sure if im missing something or they just want to be living the life with no kids

are you sure its a hen ? In some Budgie types like recessives often people think they have a girl but its a boy.

I agree - double check the gender.

budgies breed like rabbits if they get the chance, so having budgies with boxes for 3 years and not one egg is surprising.

Could she be too old ?

besides her age is their another way of telling that shes too old? she has never breeded

Hens past the age of four have issues breeding but usually can still breed if they want to and you dont try and stop them. If this bird was an adult when you bought it, there is no telling how old it is.

Also when posting a picture of a bird to show its cere you need a close up photo of the cere with no flash used on the camera. That photos shows nothing.

To me the blue budgie on the right looks female

Perhaps she is infertile, or like Kaz suggested, over age

i think she might be infertile because for the years i've had her the couple have never bred. hopefully i can get a closer photo but bella is photo shy. Anyway thanks heaps

yeah there is another pair on the other side of the aviary which is split in half, they can't get to each other.

just want to know though because i did get the pair when they were babies why till this day they have never bred however show signs such as feeding each other. her cere is white to light brown it looks a bit crusty

Has the nest box always been in there or do you ever take it out? It could be something as simple as that the box is just 'part of the furniture'. I would take the nest box out personally and then put it back in a couple of weeks. If you have had her for 2-3 years since she was a baby then she is at the old end of breeding age but she isn't too old

okay thanks yeah the nesting box has always been in there i guess they believe its furniture funny. definetly will remove it thanks again

my other pair of budgies which i recently paired up were so cute today. the boy budgie was going to the nesting box and would go in there and the female budgie would go near the box as well but not inside. he did this a couple of times. this was funny as a couple of days ago he seemed to be attacking her looks like he's finally realised he likes her lol

Which other pair ? You said you would remove the nestbox when told the NEW HEN was too young..............and no quarantine and no settling in period of time.

the courting and excitment I think is getting you carried away, you have received excellent advice and though you may think it is a little hard advice it is the truth, please do take it, we can't make you but I do hope that you think about the best interest of the birds and not your feeling of excitment.

If she is laying eggs it will be the male that is infirtile, if not laying eggs it the female infirtile.

A hen can still lay infertile eggs if they have no neucleas in it (Yolk)

 

I would also remove or cover this shiny stuff - it would have the same distracting affect of a mirror.
