Posted September 14, 200816 yr Hi guys I posted this question in with the question about Hardy making a strange noise but thought since it is not a general question, I would put it here too Hardy stopped eating today, I noticed about lunchtime that his poop turned to just yellow water and that there were no husks in his feed bowl, I don't have a crop needle and don't know how so I mixed up some egg and bisciut mix and feed him with a syringe, his poop turned back to normal for a few hours then went back to water so I fed him again but I don't know if I giving him enough, how much should I be trying to get in to him and how often?? Other than not eating he is fine, he preens, chats to Santana who is now in a seperate cage, flys back and forth in his cage and is alert. He is going back to the vet tomorrow so Just need to get him through the night till then, can anyone help me please?
September 14, 200816 yr Please...when you go to the vet tomorrow....despite what you are going there for....ask for a lesson in crop feeding and buy a 14 guage straight 3 inch crop needle for the future. Helps administer meds and save non eating birds. Since you are paying for a visit may as well take the chance and learn an extra skill.
September 14, 200816 yr Well they don't eat at night so I would think that if you give him a feed before he goes to bed he should be fine until the morning. Will he take the egg and biscuit off a spoon or do you have to force it into him? You could try putting some in a little dish for him Edited September 16, 200816 yr by Elly
September 14, 200816 yr Author Ohh trust me i plan to, I have never had a sick bird before so this is new to me Edited September 16, 200816 yr by Elly
September 14, 200816 yr Try millet that is what I did when Merlin stopped eating if that doesn't help you will need to hand feed because they do go down fast without eating, I just experienced this with Merlin. Keep an eye on the poo's if he is eating there will be black in them if not then just white and sloppy.

September 16, 200816 yr Author An update on Hardy, he went to the vet last night for his second antibiotic injection, she said he sounded much better but the poor little thing had lost 14grams in 3 days, he is still a healthy wieght of 51gms (i think at 65gms he might have been a little over wieght) so I got him home and hand fed him some stuff the vet gave me (she didn't have any crop needles to show me how it was done) so I had to use the syringe again and boy was he unimpressed, I nearly had a heart attack when I had finished cause he didn't look well at all, I thought I had killed him but he settled down and I caught him eating at 3am, there were heaps of husks in his dish this morning so I am hoping that he keeps at it. the vet said so long as he starts eating properly then he doesn't have to go back. YAY
