its not the best cage but i'm only 14 and the timber isn't the best quality..

i am going to put mesh/wire on the lengths and a door on the other side. How do i clean the droppings of my eventual birds / budgies.... my friend suggested put seeds on the bottom and the budgerigars will poo on the seeds and it will eventually deteriorate - any tips?

thank you

Well you could, um, i'm not sure what you could... do the wood it is a little rotted not meaning to be rude i am also 14 how many hours did it take you to make that it looks like you did a good job on it.

how do you plan on making the door for it that is the hardest part.?

Hello and welcome

Do you know what the wood is made from??

Also, if it is stained/painted/varnished then it is not suitable as the birds will chew the wood.

For the bottom of your aviary, you could put sand, kitty litter or paper. You will need to clean it weekly as a build up of poo will create moulds and bacteria to grow which will make your birds sick.

Also thanks for this help; i forgot to mention on my other quote that the door will be easy in my words i am going to get hinges and wood just like on the other side and its done. I hope my aviary works out and thanks again for your help people. Pictures will be coming as soon as it is finished. :D May i ask another questions? For the perches how am i going to put them in my aviary without them falling off? ..

May i ask another questions? For the perches how am i going to put them in my aviary without them falling off? ..

We are here to help - and we love lots of questions so feel free to ask as many as you like

Are you going to leave the aviary in the long ways position?? It will be better if you do as it gives the birds lots more room to fly.

Will you be raising it off the ground? You also need to consider mouse and rat proofing.

The perches should be branches from native (nontoxic) trees and you can poke them through the wire or use wire/rope etc to tie them in place.

can you please give me any examples of non-toxic trees i can use, also there areant any mouse or rats but if there is I will wire the bottom of the aviary as well :P Thanks for the help.. also i will be leaving the aviary long ways .. it will be left like the picture i have shown you.

I have to point out that wiring the bottom of the cage doesn't always put a stop to the mice and rats, I would suggest as previously mentioned to raise it off the ground

okay, thanks for the advice.

HI

I would attach wood to one or two of the sides of your avairy. It blocks the wind and keeps them warmer at night. You could either bolt the avairy to your fence or the back of your house or you could get a few milk crates and sit them under it. That way it will be raised off the ground. You can just put the perches through the bird wire and they wont move, get gum tree branches if you have any. For the bottom of the avairy you could use wire or wood and just put newspaper on it, then about every week you can change the newspaper. Make the door from one of the wooden sides, cut some wood out and attach hinges to the door and the wood.

would it be possible if i make my floor grass as shown in the picture then when the birds poo i just wash the poo into the ground? would it be possible?.,

Yes but one problem with that is mice. Mice will burrow under and they do alot of harm to birds. Rat droppings give diseases to birds and rats bite the birds. Your better off raising it off the ground. If you wanted to have the avairy on the flat ground then you could dig a trench around it and put cement or bricks about 2 feet down. I am not sure if the mice would dig that far down or not. You could have shade cloth down their but Mice can dig through it.

i think you may encounter some problems by making this cage from wood. Not only from rotting or poisoning if they chew it, but water logging, the wood will probably deteriorate, harbour alot of bacteria and fall apart in time...

I agree with Libby. Also, as yet the frame you have made has no strength...it need more supports to join it ip. The minute you raise it or move it, it will collapse. You cannot have it on the ground for all the reason stated, and mice do get through aviary mesh 12mm square........and chicken wire isnt right for aviaries.

down where i live, its been raining all night and all morning... i checked to see if the aviary is in good shape and its good laugh out loud..
and chicken wire isnt right for aviaries.
then what type of wire is right for aviaries and how do i add it?you guys areant much support, 1st of all i got this all for free from my neighbour so i payed nothing instead of just leaving it there i thought of making an aviary. Well doesnt matter...

also i have moved it by myself and the wood stayed on nothing collapsed

Just a thought but have you heard of freecycle? It's a yahoo group which has groups in all areas of Australia and everything offered or asked for must be free, chances are if you asked on there someone in your area might actually have a big cage they could give you, if you were in Melbourne I'd offer you one of my old ones that I don't use anymore.

No one here is attacking you but it is important that anything you are going to use to house an animal is suitable and most importantly safe for that purpose, the guys here are just trying to make sure that you don't have to suffer the heartbreak of sick or dead budgies that's all :P

you are trying to help but if i had money and support from my parents you reacon i would be using this wood? not at all.. My parents oppose the idea of an aviary while i love it.. so they wont support me and i have to use what i can../

You will need to put two more bits of wood across the bottom area thats currently on the grass for stability.....corner to corner.

The reason we advise different mesh is to do with the size of holes and birds being able to get out through holes too big.

Personally having been in the same situation I don't think you should go through with it without your parents support. Maybe you could ask them how you could gain their support, say by doing jobs to save up the money to buy the things you need to make a btter cage. That way you would be showing maturity to your parents and they might be more willing to support your endeavour.

Incase you are thinking I'm just some old fogey having a go at you I'm only in my 20s so I do still remember what it's like to be 14 and desperate for a pet.

Hey mate,

Wow, You have made that all by yourself Good Job ....

I can see that you are very enthusiastic to make your aviary ....

You have been given al great deal of advice, It isn't that we are picking on you or other new members,

it is that we are guiding you and it is only for the Health and Safety of your birds :P

Where abouts in NSW are you - If you are close by I may have a few things :D that can help you out :hap:

Neat is right. I live 10 mins from neat, so if she cant help you out I might be able to even meet up with you and show you my set up and you might get ideas.

what is it that your parents don't like about your idea ?

maybe its something simple there will normally be a reason why they don't like it.

Remember my old aviary: above? Rotten, weak and old nails not to mention. Well I have seem to have found some timber in my shed! :) So i decided to knock this one down and to build a healthy aviary which isnt rotten but strong and new nails! :) I took a picture below and will show you guys my final/finished aviary!

DSC00007.jpgdown

Its not the longest or tallest but I will add adjustments once I have finished this one! So what do you guys think? good?

Instead of replying to you in my threads let me just say now, Thankyou! :D

:) Now your talking :D

Nice timber, I love the turns in it :)

Did you get your hands on some mesh yet ? Make sure if / when you do the largest the hole can be

is 12mm anything bigger and you could loose a budgie ( heads get stuck )

I am glad that you didn't take the advice the wrong way and though members were picking on you.

and I am extremely glad that you listened and re thought :D :D :D

I can't wait to see the final result Well Done
