Posted September 13, 200816 yr Hi Could someone please tell me the mutations/genetics/ of each of these budgies. Also could you tell me the aproximate age. Thanks. This photo is of koko and banana, KOKO is the blue normal and banana is the yellowface. This is Primo Primo Wings Primo has no iris ring so could be a pied or somthing. Banana could be a yellowface opaline? She has white iris, This is probably incorect but she has yellow all through her blue body so doesnt that mean yellowface type 1? koko looks to be a blue normal with white iris. Thanks very much.
September 13, 200816 yr You are mostly right Primo is a recessive pied (male) Banana is a YF1 opaline Koko is a normal blue Not sure on age, but they dont look too young or too old Edited September 13, 200816 yr by **Liv**
September 13, 200816 yr Bananas is a YF Oplaine skyblue Hen KOKO is a Skyblue Normal Cock Primo is a i think a Rec pied * THIS ONE CONFUSED ME
September 13, 200816 yr Koko is a normal sky blue mature male Banana is a yellow face opaline sky blue female Primo is a recessive pied (olive?) male. can't quite see the colour of the patch on his body. He has a lot more clear areas than most recessive pieds but there is no obvious second mutation (He isn't a double factor dominant pied) They all look like mature birds. Once budgies are over about 9 months old it becomes very difficult to tell their age until they get very old
September 13, 200816 yr Thanks very much everyone. Could Primo be a clearflight? No, definately recessive Edited September 13, 200816 yr by Neville
September 13, 200816 yr Author Thanks very much When I put primo and Banana in a breeding cage in a few months time do you know what the offspring would be? Any yellowface blues? P.S= This is my understanding of colour mutations, correct me if its wrong please... (Mutations are so hard to understand) Yellow based budgie - Light green (no dark factor) Dark green (1 dark factor) Olive green (2 dark factors) White based budgie - Skyblue (no dark factor) Cobalt (1 dark factor) Mauve (2 dark factors) Grey factor - white based budgie will turn grey? Green based budgie will turn grey green? Where does violet come in? Where does albino or lutino come in? Thanks very much Edited September 13, 200816 yr by pearce
September 13, 200816 yr When I put primo and Banana in a breeding cage in a few months time do you know what the offspring would be? Any yellowface blues? If Primo is split for blue you will get about 25% yellow face blues, 25% white face blues and 50% greens. If Primo is not split for blue the chicks will all be green series You won't get any opalines unless Primo is split for opaline and you won't get any recessive pied unless Banana is split for recessive pied P.S= This is my understanding of colour mutations, correct me if its wrong please... (Mutations are so hard to understand) Yellow based budgie - Light green (no dark factor) Dark green (1 dark factor) Olive green (2 dark factors) White based budgie - Skyblue (no dark factor) Cobalt (1 dark factor) Mauve (2 dark factors) You’re right up to hereGrey factor - white based budgie will turn grey?Green based budgie will turn grey green? Where does violet come in? Where does albino or lutino come in? Grey and violet are both colour adding factors. They are in addition to the bird’s colour. They are both dominant so if they don’t show in at least one of the parents, they won’t appear in the chicks. Lutino or albino is a sex linked mutation. It will only appear in the chicks if the cock bird carries the gene even if the hen is a visible lutino or albino
September 15, 200816 yr I love posts like this one, where someone asks "what is my bird".... I read the questions wrote down my answer before looking at what anyone else replied and got two of the three correct !!!!!! I'm proud of myself (can you tell) lol. I did guess that the yellow bird was a recessive pied male, but thought it was DEC. Now I see it does have a few markings on it's wings. Oh, well I tried. I also guessed that the ages of the blue birds were about 1 and 2 years old and the yellow bird to be just under a year, but I guess that wasn't a good guess (as Neville pointed out it's hard to tell). By the way I love your YF1 (I really, really want a YF2 cock). They all look great!!!
September 16, 200816 yr I thought I saw a little bit of a dark iris ring in Primos eye in the picture where he's looking at the camera... If he's a young bird the ring might not yet be all white. But maybe I didn't see well. Anyways a recessive pieds eye should be totally black, without a faintest hint of a ring - any colour. But so many have said he's a recessive and I thought it too at first, so he must be one. So beautiful bright yellow! Lovely birds!!!

In the third picture. It looks like I can see it towards the bottom of his eye??? Maybe he is under a year as I guessed and it's just not developed yet???
September 17, 200816 yr err, no look at his eye then at the normal blue bird's eye to see the difference. What i believe you two are seeing is the skin of the eyelid shining up into the eye from the sunlight
September 18, 200816 yr I have a budgie, now 10 months old who seems to have no iris ring though she actually has, it's just very dark grey. And I've seen grown birds with iris rings very dark grey... Though of course, it could be just a reflection, too
September 18, 200816 yr yes i know some birds can have faint iris rings, but the patterns with the rest of this bird matchs recessive pied. also to see the mark you were refering to i had to move my screen to a different angle to bright the screen, in the normal angle i only saw black.
