Posted September 8, 200816 yr Hi everyone, I've been wanting to post this post for some time now, but was worried everyone would lose interest waiting for the progress pictures, but I couldn't wait any longer so here it is. This was the slab which seemed to take forevere to come along. Then came the shed which we had to move off the slab because my dad gave me some really good quality sealer for the concert, but then yet again I had to wait for some nice weather to be able to seal it which of course took over another 2 1/2 weeks. Now here is how it stands today. I now need to put the insultation in the breeding room and we are going to put a clear whirly thing on the roof for ventilation and light although it will need added lighting, a fluro and maybe a skylight aswell. Once finished it is going to have obviously the breeding shed which is 3 metres X 3 metres then a 1 metre walkway between the shed and 2 flights which will be 1.5 wide and 3 metres long, Dads coming over later this week (more waiting) to work out how we are going to attach the walkway and flights to the shed, you know the boring stuff like which angle the roof needs to be and where the guttering for the rain needs to be placed and how much of the flights need to be sheltered etc and so on. I like having the enclosed walkway so if any budgies do happen to escape they won't get far. Anyway if anyone has any ideas for my flights please let me know as I need all the help I can get.
September 8, 200816 yr Thats really wonderful Fantastic and your ideas are great. As far as flights go they say around 4 metres front to back so 3 metres is almost the same thing. Perches high at the back and food low on pedestals at the front........makes the birds strong in wings and shoulder development PS be vey sure the vapour from the sealer is well gone before enclosing it as some of those formulations would choke the life out of a desert camel PPS arent you meant to be at least half a metre away from fencelines ? September 8, 200816 yr Looking good. Your slab is a nice size and a great start. The shed is huge and will hold lots of breeding pairs . For the flights, I'd recommend a solid roof, and walls on the sides with possibly one or two open sides (this would depend on the way they will face, as you need to block cold breezes etc... I'd also put solid walls up to about knee height?!?! So mice etc... can't climb in. Then start your wire above this! Good luck and I look forward to the progress photos (I love them all!!! )
September 8, 200816 yr Author My Dad who is in the building trade tells me that there are no restriction as far as 3 X 3 sheds go you could fill your whole back yard up with them and not have to get any permits or have any restrictions. And my neighbours are all pretty cool with the budgies anyway so I don't think (knock on wood) that anyone would have any complaints. If they do I'll have to cross that bridge when I come to it. Extend the concert and just move the whole lot over I suppose.Oh and by the way I did notice that when we put the shed onto the concert I could then smell the fumes of the sealer so I have since opened the window and the door of the shed and won't let a budgie within Koowee until the vapour has totally gone. I have I bit of outfitting to do to the breeding room aswell, so it will still be some time before I can get the birds in there.
September 8, 200816 yr Looks fabulous so far. I bet you cant wait til it's all done and finished. My partner and I are currently putting in more aviaries for our larger parrots and then we will be starting on my bird room/shed. My cabinets are currently in my spare room
September 8, 200816 yr Author My dad organized some melamite cut to my sizing for my husband and I to make into breeding boxes. So I thought I might post a couple of photo's of them. This is what they look like made up. They're 60cm long, 45cm heigh and 30cm deep. They have a small sliding door on the top right corner to mount a breeding box to the cage, but can also be used without which I thought was a good idea. I had a bit of trouble finding someone to make these cage fronts and they were a little on the costly side but I think they will be worth it.
September 8, 200816 yr With a setup like you are going to have, there should be a champion or two coming out of your breeding room Your photos are all the right sizes so dont worry...you need to refresh your browser thats all Edited September 8, 200816 yr by KAZ
September 8, 200816 yr Author Thanks Kaz, What would we do without the likes of you? I'm pretty hopeless with computers, shows doesn't it. Anyway thanks again.
September 16, 200816 yr Author Well, Frustration has hit yet again nothing has happened since my last post. But there is light at the end of the tunnel, we have a 40th Birthday to go to on Friday night and a wedding to go to on Saturday and also have childrens sporting activities to attend during the weekend but the week end after next - kids on holidays, so no sporting commitments and my husband has promised that the aviary will be No.1 priority. So I will get  if promises get broken. Although I did get to buy a heap of supplies from the UBC on Sunday and my first show cages. Edited September 16, 200816 yr by **Liv** tyops
September 16, 200816 yr WOW - Did you get a cement layer to lay the slab or did you do it your self ?? I know the frustration about waiting and waiting to get things up and running I am still at a dead end with mine Best to double check about the budgies being so colse to the fence before it is all done other wise it will be more waiting .... Those breeding cages look unreal .. Best of luck with it all mate
September 16, 200816 yr In some shire areas you have to have a permit to keep birds (budgies) A breeder in my club had to fork out for a permit & has to renew it each year,& that slab might just be to close to the fence if they happen to come by.In the case of the breeder in my club, the councel people, were out the front of his house looking at bthe foot path, & heard the budgie & the ranger turned up to check things out,Every thing was okay, but it did cost him$$$.
September 20, 200816 yr Author Hi guys, Thanks for all the tips and yep you have got me a bit worried about the aviary being up against the fence, anyway Dad knows some bloke who works in this department at the council so he is going to ring him and find out all the rulings. I worry because I feel if you ring the council directly you then give them a reason to come snooping around :hap: even if you explain your only inquiring for further reference :hap: .
September 20, 200816 yr Another reason its not good to have it right up against the fence is rodents ( rats ) like to run fencelines and get on top of aviaries and spook the birds at night. Runoff from rain will end up in the neighbours yard also due to close proximity to fence.
March 21, 200916 yr Author Hey Budgielover, how are you progressing with the new set up now? Any new pics? Well I've decided tomorrow is the day to update with some new photos, because I finally feel I have time, so by tomorrow evening you'll be able to see some progress.
