September 16, 200816 yr Usually the eggs laid from the perch are just accidents pure and simple. A product of bad timing thats all. Edited September 16, 200816 yr by KAZ
September 16, 200816 yr Author Usually the eggs laid from the perch are just accidents pure and simple. A product of bad timing thats all. I think that might be it as i heard one of my birds squawking late last night (about 11pm). When i went out and checked i didnt notice an egg, but I didn't look on the cage floor either - so it was probably her as the egg surprised her.
September 16, 200816 yr Wow Liv, Getting eggs is just thrilling, but wait till the first hatches and OMG I mean it's better than anything well...... This is just a wonderful time when having budgies (breeding season). Good luck for lots and lots of fertile eggs and beautiful chicks to come.
September 17, 200816 yr Author This pair have had a rough trot The male from this pair died suddenly about 2 hours ago He seemed fine upon morning inspection. At my lunch time inspection I found him on his back completely unmarked and looking as if he were sleeping peacefully. Not even a hint of poopy vent or weight loss - he just literally "fell off the perch" Photos... I really liked him too, but on close inspection of his ring, i think he was a lot older than i realised. it read SC 9c 6060 SA So i put COD (cause of death) to be old age.
September 17, 200816 yr Sweetie...so sorry to hear this The rigours of breeding. Sounds like heart attack. No soiled vent so he wasnt sick or stressed. Gold ring ? He should be an 06 bird so not too old either.

September 17, 200816 yr regardless of the symbol type...you read the symbol first ( left to right reading ) and number next which makes him an 06 bird
September 17, 200816 yr Author regardless of the symbol type...you read the symbol first ( left to right reading ) and number next which makes him an 06 bird okay, That is a real shame as that means he was in his prime then

Thanks Kaz and Maesie Brighter side - got more eggs again and Lady is due to lay again this afternoon Correction - Lady HAS laid an egg and it landed safely in the box Oh, i didn't realise he was the one from that auction. So sad How many eggs to they have each now? How long does it normally take them to finish laying their eggs? Sorry for so many questions, I don't know much about breeding. That's great news about Lady though, she might just get her act together
September 17, 200816 yr Sorry about the lost of the male but it is good news about Lady landing the egg in the box.
September 18, 200816 yr Sorry to hear of your loss Liv. I had something a bit similar happen with a cock bird of mine a few months ago too. He was an 07 bird, looked fit and was young, beautiful grey boy. I bought several birds from this particular breeder and have had no troubles with any others. I had him in a wire cage with a hen and put a nest box in there and one morning checked on them as I always do and found him "sitting" in the nest box. I tapped the box and he didnt move and my first thought was that the hen had attacked him. I got him out and he was dead, just sitting in that position. He wasnt moulting, he had a clean vent and I have no idea why he died. I guess sometimes, these things just happen. On another note, congrats on your eggs from Lady. It's always thrilling getting eggs, but extra special when it's from an "extra special" bird
September 18, 200816 yr Author After the passing of this hens "mate" I was just wondering if it's okay to give her a new man as she was not bonded in any way to her previous mate. I have this male who is a real "STUD MUFFIN" as he is the father of almost every previous chick i have His name is Pop. If and when i can put him with her??? Oh, and I have cleaned out the cage completely (just in case)
September 18, 200816 yr I would put them together asap. I dont see any reason not to. I just swapped a hen in a cabinet with another, even though she was bonded with the male, cause she was showing no interest in the nest box at all. The boy was interested in the new girl as soon as she was put in, and she has been ducking in and out of the nest box already.
September 20, 200816 yr Author I bought a really bright, white LED key chain light today and candled all the eggs - I do it in the nest without touching or moving the eggs in any way. Total egg count and fertility so far is: 3 and one on the way - all seem clear so far :hap: -- i really hope this male is not sterile 3 eggs so far -- 1 showing veins 3 eggs so far -- 1 - 2 showing veins 2 eggs so far -- 1 showing veins 2 eggs so far - too early to tell nothing yet - Pop loves the hen, but the hen appears disinterested.
