September 20, 200816 yr I bought a really bright, white LED key chain light today and candled all the eggs - I do it in the nest without touching or moving the eggs in any way. Total egg count and fertility so far is: 3 and one on the way - all seem clear so far :hap: -- i really hope this male is not sterile 3 eggs so far -- 1 showing veins 3 eggs so far -- 1 - 2 showing veins 2 eggs so far -- 1 showing veins 2 eggs so far - too early to tell nothing yet - Pop loves the hen, but the hen appears disinterested. How exciting, I hope the first pair pull through though :hap: How many eggs does a pair normally lay?
September 20, 200816 yr Author The average is about 5-7 eggs, but some lay as many as 9-10. they are all still laying so who knows how many are still to come :hap: The first pairs hen just laid her 4th egg. I really hope to see some veins soon as she is a really good mum

September 20, 200816 yr Liv, I am sorry that i am late in seeing this post . Sorry for the loss of the grey werid how they just die like that. But congrats on the eggs and the fertility of them Fun times ahead
September 22, 200816 yr Author A quick update. Is has been 9 days since the pair below begain to lay - ALL four eggs (with one on the way later today) are clear - what do i do?? I don't want to waste her precious egg laying resorces. Do i leave her in case i need her as a foster or should i get her a new man?? Lady has 3 eggs now and the first egg is showing veins
September 22, 200816 yr Author Has she stoppped laying? - Not yet. She is still laying every second day like clockwork. In about an hour i will go out and find her 5th egg
September 22, 200816 yr I would wait longer and either wait til she tosses her eggs, or remove them and let them try again. I have found that often maiden couples will lay their first round clear. My greys did that, and their 2nd round, they only laid 4 eggs, but I have 3 out of 4 very healthy babies from them now
September 22, 200816 yr Author Thanks Sunnie. The hen is a great mum - she is Latte and Cookies mum. The male had a lot of feather around the vent so he has had a trim and i am hoping that might help - If they manage to get babies i think they will look really pretty
September 22, 200816 yr Have you just recently trimmed him? That might have been your problem in the first round, so fingers crossed, with a trim, the 2nd round will bring results?
September 22, 200816 yr Author Yes, I only trimmed him yesterday after seeing all the clear eggs. he was Very feathery "down there" too Fingers crossed that was the problem.
September 25, 200816 yr Author LADY laid a double yolked egg today Its a lot bigger than the others and i can clearly see 2 yolks when i candle it. Picture You can better see the shadow of the 2 yolks when the image is smaller Edited September 25, 200816 yr by **Liv**
September 25, 200816 yr Twins maybe ? Hard to get them to point of hatching as they most often die in shell first, BUT if they make it to hatching it takes a lot to get them strong and feeding once hatched. Be prepared if you get to that stage to top them up with their first couple of feeds.
September 25, 200816 yr Author that would be so exciting to get twins :D I know the reality of them developing and hatching is slim - it's so great having help so readily available
September 26, 200816 yr Author This pair is 100% clear But because she is such a brilliant mum and he is showing signs of a devoted dad, I have given them 3 fertile eggs from one of each of the other hens (except on who only has 2 fertile eggs) She will be my safety net as i know she wont harm or pluck the babies etc :fear
September 26, 200816 yr I know how you feel Liv - my grey clearbodies are due on the 5th of October and it just seems like forever away!!
September 27, 200816 yr That is exciting news about Lady, I never knew that it was possible for birds to have twins! I am sorry to hear about your other pair :fear So is it 18 days until they hatch? If so that does seem too far away
September 30, 200816 yr Author two days until chicks are due. I can see the babies moving around in the shell when i candle them - SOOO CUTE When will i hear them cheep from in the shell?? Total fertile egg count as of today is 17 all ranging from new veins to just about to hatch.
October 4, 200816 yr Author Day 20 and still no Jellybeans yet - but many eggs have visible "draw-down" as the air cell gets larger in preparation for hatching. One egg has a tiny crack and i can hear the chick cheeping from inside There will be a bub any minute
October 4, 200816 yr oooOOoh hurry up chickie!! My tcbs are due tomorrow, so no doubt I will be obssessively checking haha
October 4, 200816 yr Author WOOOO HOOOOOOO!!! this pair have their first baby After lunch i did my usual rounds and the egg with a crack had become and egg with a hole and frantic cheeping . And then before my eyes the top of the egg burst open "Awww - its bright out here" Chick has red eyes
