Pet shop

Yesterday when i went to on of the local pet shops to look at the budgies i found that the whole tank/cage was filled with baby budgies that were either plucked really badly or hadn't got all their feathers yet which i think means they're too young to be away from their parents. The pet shop was selling them for $35 (aust) which is about twice as much as you would pay from the other 2 local pet shops. I think it's disgusting that they accepted these budgies from someone and even worse that they're selling them. Some poor kid will come along and think how cute they are that they haven't got all their feathers yet and the bird will probably die in a couple of days of starvation!

report them to your local animal welfare authority. its the only way to stop this type of thing happening. if you dont report them you are right, some people will buy the birds and will be very upset about the experience, and also the money will be going to fund the poor breeding and selling of the birds.

Hi

You must report them..they after all, are making a profit from the suffering of these little creatures. I have no qualms questioning stores about their animals.. I once found a so called upper class pet store selling ferrets that were as high as themselves in poop and were in a round bird avairy. they couldnt sleep in a dry area coz of the poop. Are some people really as thick as they act or is that how they live themselves!! It makes me soo angry...

I find that hard to believe ring the R.S.P.A and report them.

In my state NSW you need to fill out a registration form to sell budgies to a pet shop or you can be fined and the pet shop as well.

I will not let budgies go until I see them feeding on there own.

Usually between six to seven weeks is the right age

So do the right thing and contact the local authority?s

Awww... that's really horrible! Around here, the pet shops take pretty good care of their birds, although they could have underlying illnesses that aren't apparent right now... I'd definitely do what the others said and report it. You could also go in there and talk to the manager... I did that once... I demanded to know why they were even selling the animals, why they were in such bad condition... they gave me the breeders number and I called and complained. Before leaving, I told them I'd never shop at their store again, but I have been back, and their animals are much healthier and better cared for... thanks to a little visit and some fines from the ASPCA

i was in a pet shop on saturday and of course i had to have a peek at the budgies, there was a mother buying one for her child, the clerk was explaining about budgies and then said 'this one would be best for you as hes young' i have to interupt because the bird looked alot older and was female.

The clerk went red and the mother started to ask me questions, so i picked the little boy out a young green male bird and explained about his diet, toys and sizes of cages etc.

The clerk let me into the sub avery (the walkway between the avery and the store) the little green male was also already finger trained, the clerk put him into the carry box n i helped them pick up the bits they needed (The boy had been reading budgie books for 3 months and already knew a fair amount) his mum also took the website address for extra info.

If i hadn't been there they wud of ended up with an old hen who i may add was really biting the clerk.

Why can't pet stores employ people who know about birds????

Well Done Claire :o

A lady after my own heart!! :angel1:

I agree when dealing with live animals people should be trained properly..

I'm glad there a few good people left in the world, (most part of the forum)(Laughing out loud)! Anyway, that was very nice of you to take over when you needed too. A lot of pet store employees are just hired to "sell" the animals like they are merchandise, which in my opinion is unethical! I think when someone is hired they should be well educated on the animals.

Also if your like me you might not be lucky enough to live in a town that has an A.S.P.C.A, or animal abuse officer. Last year some people who lived down the road from me were starving their three horses. And I mean badly starving them, they were very close to death, when I noticed them. I called the local dog warden and reported the abuse. Within four hours all three horses were loaded up and removed from the awful living conditions. I guess the dog warden called the police. As awful as it is, the police sometimes listen to other officials before taking our word for it. But my point is, you can call a dog pound, humane society, or dog warden, they usually will be more than willing to help you out.

Oh, how I wish that there could be a law forbidding thesale of animals in a store, as though they were nothing more than a dinner service, or a table lamp, or an ashtray. Cages are usually wayyy overcrowded, infection is often rampant because of lack of Q, and knowledge of the poor creatures is all to often practically nil.

Maybe, one day....

It wouldn't be so bad, if they all were properly cared for, and sold with knowledge of what the new owner can expect and how to care for them. But a lot of pet stores are terrible!

We can only hope...

In the uk, you don't have to have any sort of training to work in a pet shop, but to run one you need to at least pass your pet store management exam.

I'm terrible for inspecting pet shops when i go into them... if i could find a gap in the business i'd do it professionally. When i was in ireland there was a new pet shop open, and in one side of the window there was bearded dragons and on the other side was budgies. there was loads in the cage - way over legal stocking density, plus it's illegal to put any animals in the window of a shop. I wasn't very impressed so i went in and told them that they could get closed down for it, and they're gonna end up with very sick animals.

The guy i bought bob off was supposed to be an avian specialist. He sold bob to me as a "12-week old ****"

Bob was actually about 5 to six weeks old, a "she" and was extremely skinny cos there wasn't enough food in the cage. i had to mush up special food for it for a week or so til she learned to eat properly.

Makes me mad...

Thats horrible!!! Some people have little to no compassion for quality of life for animals. Its pitaful these people can interact, care for, and sell them.

finch please dont name shops your post had to be deleted

Just ring up the right authorities in your country and they will inspect the shop

Most of the pet shops where I live are very good always clean and tidy

There is one shop sells large Macaws/Black Cockatoos but you need to obtain a license to keep them as they are protected

The RSPCA well at least in my area STINKS....

Thirty five dollars for a budgie?! EEP we paid $10 for a non hand tamed, and $15-20 for tamed! Though that pet shop isnt very good

I get paid $10.00 for babies and $20.00 for show

All proceeds go to my fav charity me!

seams the right thing to do

I don't agree with the RSPCA at all... PDSA much better...

I don't agree with the RSPCA at all...
i totaly agree any animal charity that spends millions building new head offices and pays their top person hundreds of thousands and then lays of inspectors is a joke

Its about the animals safety and well being, I also agree.

I went to complain to the pet shop today and they still had some scruffy looking budgies. They said nothing was wrong with them but i'm not sure. Some definitely looked under weight. They seem to have sold or disposed of the plucked ones. I hope they haven't died. I don't think complaining did much to stop them selling un healthy birds. :)
