Budgie Pair Not Creating Family

Hi there, just an update on Samuel and Opal. I tried Renee's idea and removed Samuel. Well, after a 2 day flirtation marathon with Billie I decided to put Samuel back in with Opal. All I can say is Opal definitely missed him and she has been very attentive with Samuel, preening and following him around the aviary. I still have not seen them mate but Opal has shown a great deal more interest in both Samuel and the nestbox and when Samuel goes in the box and squawks for her she follows him in. She's also gotten a lot more active flying around...seems like she's showing off for him, but I don't know. I did read in another thread that Kaz(I think) had done removing the male to interest the female and it seemed to work. I will keep thinking along these lines in the hope that something works.

From the day I bought Opal she has never shown any interest in anything and never been all that active. She has always been very aloof and snooty, so seeing her act like a little kid is good.

I will in a couple of days try removing Samuel again and see how they go.

:)

Absensce makes the heart grow fonder , good luck.

You are right...it was me that removed the male when the female wasnt all that interested. That was Omelette and Stud....first round 9 eggs second round 12 eggs !!

Sounds like it works huh

A new girlfriend... yes, but you'll have to quarantine for 30 days, so they won't be able to start breeding until beginning of December... Good luck with what ever you decide... maybe put him back with his 'old' girlfriend... maybe he just needed a spark up??? If not... go for the newbie

^ I thought that might spark him up a little. I look forward to hearing how it goes. Good Luck!

Glad it's working out for you- Fingers crossed! :parrot:

The pair I am currently trying to breed have been together for about 2 weeks now. They seem to be happy together and Samuel has been trying to do the right thing. The hen, Opal, doesn't seem too interested and I'm wondering if maybe the lady I got her from has mistaken her age and maybe she's a bit younger than the 12 months she told me. I've included a photo in the hope that someone would be able to confirm her age.

And this is Samuel and Opal's breeding set up. It seemed Billie and Oscar had no trouble with it and it was thoroughly washed before putting Samuel and Opal in it. It just seems to be taking them some time to get their act together, is this normal?

Thanks

My very 1st pair of Budgies took forever. One female my husband bought home was with the male for over 6 months. My Husband disgusted took he back to his sister, bought home anothe female and male. So for what seemed like an eternity we had these 2 cocks fussing over this female, so sign of hanky panky, my Husband was ready to return female and try another, when low and behold eggs. We had no idea which cock was the Father, but as the hatchlings took on colour we were left with no doubt as to who the father was. to this day 2 years later the second male my husband bought home has not mated. He has a couple of mates he hangs out with, and can be left in aviary when others mated then when clutch hatches he is onboard to help out with feeding hen and chicks.
