Posted September 3, 200816 yr Does anyone have information on how to do it? A video perhaps or detailed drawings? At how many days old should the chick be to ring it? Is there a standard on which leg to put it on? Does it have to be right side up when the bird is standing? If all goes well I could be ringing my first chick this weekend.

If you go to your Club's Web Site, it is there. How to band a chick I ring at 8 days but that depends on the chick. Some can be rung at 6 days, some not until 10 days. It doesn't matter in Australia what leg it goes on or wheather it is up side down or not. But you can not have more than one band when showing a bird.
September 3, 200816 yr Its when you try to get the back toe in the ring at the same time do you run into a problem. But only the 3 main toes foward is the best method
September 4, 200816 yr I tried to look for a video to post on here but can't find anything ..... I have a book from my club which shows you but something is wrong with he scanner Maybe a Showbreeder could make a video and post it on here ????

Try not to stress and overthink the process Kaz is right. It's not that hard when you get used to it. I keep a tooth pick to "hook" out the back toe. Don't forget about the back toe or you'll regret it.
September 4, 200816 yr I did two today the thrid one fell off when put on. I know they are pet types but i wanted to practise and also the people who have asked for them asked for them to be rung as they feel it's safer incase the bird gets out or gets lost.

Daz are you sure that only one ring is aloud to show a bird because ive seen some birds get showed with a split ring on the opposite leg to the one with the coded ring ? not being rude but i was just wondering if it is different from state to state. regards Joel
September 4, 200816 yr Joel in Vic if you go to a club show they MIGHT let you get away with it but do warn you off it. I know one show I went to the Judge was walking around prior to Judging and went to the desk and the owner was told to remove the split ring but I was told that if it had not been a low key meeting then the bird would have not been allowed to show.

If you saw a split ring on it would have been left on by accident and would have or should have been picked up by the judge or stewards. I remove all split rings before a show. The split rings indicate the bird is split for something like recessive and is handy to have on. BUT not for shows. Edited September 4, 200816 yr by KAZ
September 5, 200816 yr Thanks for the info Daz, i managed to get one chick rung but the other was to late! Kaz gave me a helpful hint about getting it on a chick that you have just missed but Ill save that for another time when I feel more comfortable handleing the babies! I found the three forward one back the easiest.
