What Colours Are My Budgies?

Here are my budgies:

From left to right: Cinder, Opal, Banshee, and Cloud:

Here is Cinder, Banshee and Cloud:

And here are two pictures of Storm:

What colours are all of them? And two other things, how old is Opal? And if I paired Opal with Cinder, or Opal with Banshee, what colours should I get from them? I do know Banshee and Cloud are 2 months old, they are Storm's babies..I am wondering what colours I should expect when I do breed them later though.

Also, I posted this on another budgie forums, and I was told Opal is a male recessive pied? The breeder I bought he/she from told me Opal was a female..

okay

Cinder is a a Mauve

Opal is a Cobalt

Banshee and Cloud are both Cobalts carrying violet ( hard to tell as you have use the flash in the picture)

Storm is a Violet

opal looks 8 - 12 months

Banshee and cloud are only young too I wouldn't breed them yet until they are over the 12 month mark

I agree with the age comment. Are you aware that having them in an aviary with nesting boxes in it will force them to breed too young. Any birds younger than 12 months should not be in an aviary with nestboxes.

I am aware of that, they aren't in an aviary with any nest boxes. I will breed them when they are 12 months+, not now, as they are only 2 months old. I am wanting to know what colours to expect when I do breed them later. A lot later.

Thanks for letting me know anyway.

Sorry I assumed they were in the aviary :)

I am sure someone will come along and tell you the outcomes. As a show breeder myself, I end up with a lot of greens, grey green and greys...its nice to see blue budgies for a change :D

I've answered this on another forum but I'll answer here as well

Cinder is a normal cobalt

Opal is a recessive pied cobalt

Banshee is also a recessive pied cobalt (even though he has more marking than Opal)

I'd need a better photo of Cloud and Storms back view to indentify their mutations properly but I think that Cloud is spangle cobalt and Storm is recessive pied spangle cobalt (possible violet)

Opal is male so you can't pair him with either Cinder or Banshee who are also males

I was told by the breeder I bought Opal from that he/she is a female..Cinder has been courting Opal as well.. :)

Male recessive pieds have pink ceres and in the photo his cere looks pink. If it was a female the cere should be white or very pale blue or brown. Males often court each other so that doesn't mean anything. If you'd like to post a closer photo of his face, without a flash, we could tell for sure

Neville I am glad that you said that ! I didn't want to look like a dill writing it if i was wrong :)

Welcome to the forum, you budgies are super cute, you should add a picture in the October Budgie of the Month Contest :)

wow good eyes with the cere, i can't really see that ones cere from that shot!

Males will and can do this with other males. IT is females that won't do that

By the way, any of you good with genetics please answer this. What colour chicks could I expect if I bred a Mauve Normal/Recessive Pied male with a Violet Spangle Dominant Pied (maybe split to Opaline if that's possible.) female?

I’m assuming the violet is single factor over cobalt. If it is double factor all the chicks will carry single factor violet. If the violet is over sky blue there won’t be any mauve (or sky blue).

It is not possible for a hen to be split for opaline

There will be no recessive pieds unless the hen is also split for recessive pied. If she is split you'll get some recessive pieds and some recessive pied combined with the other mutations

The chicks should include:

Normal mauve

Normal cobalt

Normal violet

Spangle mauve

Spangle cobalt

Spangle violet

Dominant pied mauve

Dominant pied cobalt

Dominant pied violet

Dominant pied spangle mauve

Dominant pied spangle cobalt

Dominant pied spangle violet

Another question. :P Is anyone able to tell me exactly how old Cinder is? I just need to know if he is old enough to breed. Thanks.
