When And To What All Ages Of Budgies We Can Deworm

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

Few weeks back I met a local birds dealer and when I have asked him regarding deworming Budgies, he was saying something that it is very tricky thing and should be done with utmost care and knowledge. Also he adviced me that only adult Budgies needs to be dewormed every 3 months once, it was not clear to me and so thought to check with all of you.

Interested to know all of your thoughts/advices on the following:

1) Whether deworming can be done to all ages of Budgies or only to adult Budgies.

2) As told to me by the local birds dealer, is there any special care and precautions needs to be taken for deworming Budgies.

3) Other than every 3 months once, is there any poop signs by which a Budgie requires additional deworming.

4) Is it okay to deworming the breeding pairs during egg laying or incubation or raising chicks period else when is the right time to deworm the breeding pairs.

Any other important things which I need to be aware of regarding deworming Budgies are most welcome.

Thanks in advance,

Karthik

Kathik it really depends on what wormers you have available to you over there, what is the active ingredient in the wormer you plan to use? I use Ivermectin spot on on the back of the neck for all my budgies and this covers a large number of parasites. I also worm them every three months and I do babies when they are about 6 weeks old :)

I do the same as MB :oliveb: But I use the wormer in their water mostly, New incoming birds get the spot on treatment. Any with obvious signs of early scalyface get the spot on treatment. Babies get wormed whilst in the kindy cage anywhere between 6 weeks and 12 weeks.

DO NOT WORM BREEDERS THAT ARE RAISING CHICKS!!!!!!!!

Agree with the others on worming - depends on what brand you get you can do the oral does 1 drop per bird in their beak or add it to their water ( if you add to their water do not give them their greens or anything that they can get water from )

Worming should be done especailly if you have soil flooring :budgiedance:

Thanks for all of your inputs and advices.

Actually I was planning to get some liquid wormer and mix it in their drinking water. Today I tried calling few Vet pharmacies to check regarding the available wormers and looks like none of them have specific wormer for birds. All of them have is for dog puppies and they are suggesting that we can use the same for birds also. But I read on net that one pet type wormer shouldn't be used with other pet types.

Heard that garlic is natural dewormer and also if I remember correctly quite some time back heard from Daz that alovera juice/liquid can be used as natural dewormer. If nothing is working out, then probably best for me is to go for any of these natural dewormers.

What is all of your opinions on this.

Many wormers are the same (for example I use bird wormer for small furry animals like rodents), the main thing is to find out the ingredients and the concentration. If you can find out which one they are recommending and what it's ingredients are we might be able to advise whether it is suitable.

Yes Aloe Vera juice / Liquid is a natural wormer.

Your vet should have the ivermec there??? If not there are plenty of places that sell Wormer

Even supermarkets do :)

Thanks MB and Neat.

Probably this weekend I am planning to personally visit vet pharmacy and if so will try to get the wormer name along with the ingredients list.

That is the whole problem, here in my place so far I couldn't able to find a Avain Vet and only general vet is available. Also all the vet pharmacies have only the products related to dogs, cows and chicken.

During my younger age we never used to deworm the Budgies, but as per advice from a general vet once in a while we used to mix very very small crystal of potassium permanganate into the drinking water.

So next my question is, whether is it mandatory to deworm the Budgies every 3 months once. Also is there any visual signs or poop signs by which we can say that particular Budgie requires immediate deworming.

Sorry for asking too many questions :P. Thanks

Vet pharmacist is advicing to go with Bripazine (listed above in point 2). Please let me know all of your advices/suggestions .

Similarly could some one, please take pictures of Ivermectin showing the name and composition. Also what is the dosage of ivermectin you guys give it to your birds every 3 months in drinking water.

That's the one would go with as I know Piperazine is often used in bird and small animal wormers :)

Ivermectin is simply ivermectin, that is what the ingredients will show. Most people won't have a helpful photo of that to show you as over here we often buy it in little clear glass bottles which aren't the original bottle.

Thanks MB. Piperazine product company suggesting dose rate of 40 ml for 100 birds mixed in 1 litre of drinking water...it is around 0.4ml for each budgie, is that okay.

What is the concentration of Ivermectin in your dewormer?

Also I heard from a general vet that if the budgies poop is green runny, then we need to immediately deworm that budgie.....is this really true.
