How Can I Tell The Difference?

Featured Replies

I think this would be a good topic for the FAQ's but I need all your help....what bird mutations look very similar but there are slight characteristics that can distinquish them.

So I would like the experts to help me out with the answers and we will get this into 1 topic under the FAQs.

How can I tell the difference between a Lutino/Ino and a Dark Eyed Clear (DEC) or a Double Factor Spangle?

You can leave your question or answer the questions put here...thank you...

I am going to PIN for a temporary until we have all our answers then I will unpin and put as 1 document in the FAQ's

OH and pictures welcome if you have an example of say an INO vs a DEC

Excellent idea... but I'm sorry, I can't contribute. I don't understand any genetics stuff... One day I hope I will want to learn it, but until then, I remain 'null and void' :) (Maybe I should read this FAQ)

Here is one:

How can I tell the difference between an Olive (bird with 2 dark factors) vs a GreyGreen (a bird green series bird with the added factor grey)?

Olives have dark blue/purple cheek patches and black-blue tails.

Grey-greens have silver grey patches and black tails.

If that's the case.. I guess that would make him an olive. Olive is a bird with 2 dark factors - in green it goes light green with no dark factors, dark green with 1 dark factor, and olive with 2 dark factors. Dark factors are inherited from their parents based on what color they are.. and how many they have.

Grey-green is when a green bird inherits a grey gene from it's parents. In blue birds, a bird that gets a grey gene would be grey.

The difference between a Lutino/Ino and a Dark Eyed Clear (DEC) or a Double Factor Spangle

These three birds can all be the same colour with the same amount of suffusion. The main difference is their eyes and the colour of the adult male's cere. There are other very subtle differences.

Lutinos (or albinos) have red eyes with an iris ring and the males cere will stay pink all his life

Dark eyed clears have dark eyes with no iris ring. (As small babies in the nest their eyes are plum coloured). The male's cere will stay pink all it's life

Double factor spangle adults have black eyes with an iris ring and the adult male's cere is the normal blue colour

Thank you Neville...I forgot to add the Black Eyed Self (BES) is there a way you can tell the difference between this mutation and the ones above? Especially the DEC?

Anyone want to do a simplified explanation of the Dominant Pied Variations vs the Recessive Pied?

I'll give it a crack :budgiedance:

Dom pieds have a band of clear body feathers across the lower-mid belly. It can be range from a little to alot, . Their flights are clear also. Dom pieds have a patch of clear feathers on the back of the head, usually about the size of a 5c piece. And have Iris rings Adult Males have blue Cere and Adult Hens have brown cere

Recessive Pieds eyes stay a dark plum color throughout their life with no Iris rings, they have markings on their flight feathers and are between 75 - 90% apart from their rump which is the original body color

There color bands are located close to the bottom of their belloesl with the rest of the body feathers being clear. Where there are marked feathers on the wings, these feathers are half clear near the top. The wings can have anywhere from a lot to very little marked feathers.

Their heads are mostly clear except sometimes for patches near their eyes and crown

The cere of the male recessive pied does not change. Adult male recessive pieds have purple ceres. Adult female recessive pieds have the normal white/tan/brown ceres.
