August 30, 200816 yr Author Life at the Angelic Zoo! I was watching them today they are so cute, i think the quail family has a convert.... Now I am thinking they need some mates and a breeding set up and please someone stop me! :hap: I am going to call them Ren and Stimpy, why well the plucked one (Ren) seems to be plotting my demise and the boofy one (Stimpy) seems to be insane. the other Option was Pinky & The Brain. I am such a soft touch when it comes to poor little guys like this, I know that I am going to have to harden up when it comes to culls of my show types but hey that's at least a few clutchs away

September 1, 200816 yr Author Well thanks for that now I am really thinking of going and getting some hens! Some help you guys are! :hap:
September 1, 200816 yr We have quails in a couple of our aviaries. I love their cute little peeping calls. Ours lay lots and lots of eggs but only a few hatch every so often. The babies remind me of the little tiny fluffy chicks you get on easter eggs
September 1, 200816 yr Author Do you have more then one pair? these two males get along fine and I figure if I am going to get them mates then i need two females but not sure about putting two pairs together.
September 1, 200816 yr I dont really know how many we have in our big aviary at the moment, they have brush etc to hide under and its a really big aviary and it makes it hard to count. The ideal is to have 3 hens to every cock though, to minimise fighting.
September 1, 200816 yr One of our babies. It's a close up shot, but look how big it is compared to the person's small finger who is holding it.
September 1, 200816 yr Do you have more then one pair? these two males get along fine and I figure if I am going to get them mates then i need two females but not sure about putting two pairs together. We had 2 pair in a 4m x 2m avairy and had to remove the grey pair as the brown male kept attacking the grey male  Lucky we will have 3 avairies going soon.
September 1, 200816 yr Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww HOW CUTE okay Av i 'll race ya with the little cotton balls ..... I am for sure going to breed them too
September 1, 200816 yr Author Ha see a simple get a few to keep the avairy clean has turned into us breeding them! We are bad! :hap: i figure that i will try and get about 4 females so then they can switch their partners around!
September 1, 200816 yr Author Quails keeping an aviary clean is an OLD WIVE'S TALE Don't tell me that Kaz that was the only reason i got them!
September 1, 200816 yr Quails keeping an aviary clean is an OLD WIVE'S TALE Don't tell me that Kaz that was the only reason i got them! If anything I think they make more mess, as they do huge poos
September 2, 200816 yr Quails keeping an aviary clean is an OLD WIVE'S TALE Don't tell me that Kaz that was the only reason i got them! If anything I think they make more mess, as they do huge poos Yes....think CHOOKS on a smaller scale another thing to take into account is....as quails need ground level food and water....and with your budgies you try and have it off the ground for rodent prevention.....ground level food and water attracts rodents. SO you need to be doubly sure they cannot get in.
September 2, 200816 yr Author My Avairy is solid around the base but now I am thinking of changing the bottom/floor of it.
September 2, 200816 yr Noooooooooooooooooooooo Cotton ball dreams are shattered :hap: Hmmmm I too will need to rethink ..... Let me know what you do Av ( i am gonna copy )
September 2, 200816 yr Author I have been offered some large pavers for next to nothing so thinking of putting road base/sand base down, leveling it off and then placing the pavers on top, they are VERY heavy so it would take alot to move them. Maybe a little rappid set under it. Then sanding over the top to help with the clean up. Then going to put some logs and shurbs on the back end for the quails. Might go and see about getting a few females. The research I have done say to have space for the two nests and have at least two to three hens to one cock to stop them fighting over a hen. Going to have to buy off another breeder as I don't want to go back to the same guy again. Will post pictures when i am done. Oh god another project!
September 2, 200816 yr Quails in an aviary are funny. They lay eggs anywhere....wherever they walk they lay eggs. Once they have a certain number of eggs all around the place....ours like to have 8 ....then they are seen rolling the eggs into their preferred nesting spot ready to sit on them. A sideways laying plastic plantpot is fine or even just some dried grass and woodchips in the corner. The thing to remember is to watch out for treading on the eggs when you go in, if your aviary is a walk through kind. Edited September 2, 200816 yr by KAZ
September 2, 200816 yr LOL I can see it now ... I will be thinking that Birds are laying eggs of perches .. Oh wait they would smash  heheh Yep still blonde LOL
September 2, 200816 yr Author Glad to know. I am getting very attached to my guys the seem so happy. i think they are just glad to be out of a bad situation. I can't wait till they can have more room in the avairy to run around in.
