okay so I have a dirt floor avairy that I want to get concreted in but have not gotten around to it. I have been thinking about getting Quails and everyone has been really positive about them so far but wondering what you guys think? Also if I am going to concrete in then maybe not such a good idea i I had heard that they don't like hard floors. Also do they fight much? Not planning on breeding them or anything just researching.

Thanks guys.

I have 2 small quails (a male and female) running around the floor of my aviary. They are not a problem in any way. I put sand over my pavers to make them more comfortable.

If you want some, go for it, but i have read it is only recommended to have 1 pair per aviary

i have 3 female quails in my avairy. i did not want to breed them so i did not get any males. They do not fight at all and i have bricks that they walk on and they are fine on it.

Kens aviary has always had quails in it...they like to sand bathe, and scratch around like chooks. If you had an area with wood chips and a sand tray for sand baths they would be happy. We have always had a mix of boys and girls and there has been no fights. Randy little things ....the boys will boof each other as well :D When frightened they fly vertical like a helicopter. :D

We have quail in all our avairies and have no problems, except when the eggs hatch then you have to remove the male. If you don't want to breed them I wouldn't get a pair :D They appear to be very over sexed birds :D

We have sand over concrete pavers.

I had a male and a female quail then i was given another pair male and female and they decided to swap partners and in the process two were killed. Ever since then i have just had the two and they have not layed any eggs maybe she is too old i am not sure but i have been told that they wont lay an egg for a year in a new pairing. Is that true?

Thanks guys, the bird place near me is closing down and I know they have a few cages of quails so I might see if I can get a bunch of females for cheap.

Also thanks Kaz I have another word to add to my "must learn to spell" list :D

Quails are a really good idea for your aviry, ive got 3 avairies with a pair in each , they eat alot of dropped seed to keep mice away.

the only thing is don't get a hen with more than 1 male as they will fight over her, it can get pretty grusem.

they take a while to settle in and wont normaly breed straight away but once they get goin they dont seem to stop, if you are planing to breed them you should get some shade cloth and put it around the bottom of the cage as they will walk straight through normal cage wire.

regards matt.

okay so do quails need to be quarantined before putting into the aviaries with the birds ????

I have been thinking about this question and thought it may be a silly but i guess that makes me the right person to ask :hap:

:hap: I would say YES... as they are still a bird and can carry diseases just as budgies can. I'd do the 30 day thing for quarantine too.

I probably wouldn't bother but you probrobably should though, if you keep your birds wormed and pest sprayed they should be right, but just to be safe i should tell you YES...

Not planning on breeding so thought about getting 3 or 4 females but might only get two.

Neat I have the same issue all my cages have wire bottoms so I am trying to work out how I rig one for them.

I was thinking .... If they fly can they have their wings clipped too ? If so Then they can go in a long cardboard box until Quarantining is finished. Otherwise I will have to get another flight cage :D

Av. Line the base with cardboard box :D that way the wire isn't hurting their feet ... And I am sure the little things can wait 30 days to get sand :hap: :D

Hmm... Quails... yes... in case you don't know, they make noises when breeding season comes along around April-May and August-September particularly the males calling for the females, and they sound like pitiful meowing kittens. This can be confusing for the do-gooders who keep calling the RSPCA thinking that a kitten is stuck somewhere in the aviary (with the birds)!

Hi.

I have 3 female quails and they are fine. My floor is cemented but in the corner I have wood shavings, dirt and grass for them. My quails make more mess than they clean, They scratch around like chooks and everything goes everywhere.

Neat I have the same issue all my cages have wire bottoms so I am trying to work out how I rig one for them.

I have a pair in a flight cage at the minute and I just put down 3 sheets thickness of newspaper on the bottom of the cage and change it every second day and it's fine for them.

When I use newspaper, I put down a really thick layer and as it needs cleaning I remove the top couple of layers as needs be revealing the cleaner newer layers underneath. Too easy

You are very clever Kaz :D I usually put down 4 sheets and remove the top 2 and change it all the second day, but as you say it would be much easier to use a thicker layer

well I got two. I went to a breeder I found and when I told him i did not want to breed and show he refused to sell me certain birds and showed me his "pet culls" i was looking at this massive avairy with all their little chicken things running around like mad and I notice this one guy getting the **** beaten out of him and another one trying to defend him. i pointed this out and the guy was all like "Survival of the fittest" ****! GRRR anyway i asked how much for the pair and he said $10 as they where **** weak things.:D:P

One looks really feather plucked and the other is a big rough and scruffy looking but hey they seem in good health otherwise. Settled them in they are a bit stressed so going to let them settle. I asked the guy if they where hens or cocks but he grumbled about how I was wasting his time and walked off and left me standing int he middle of his avairy

So I took my guys and went home. I know I should not have bought off him but his show types looked AMAZING and really well looked after. I guess I was not going to spend enough to suit him.

Anyway going to put a kitty litter tray of sand in the avairy for them (when they finish qarantine and are allowed in the avairy). Do I need anthing else? Also I know the photos suck but anyone know what sex they are? or of a way to sex them.

 I also got a tropical tank and next week once the water system is all sorted will be getting some Angel fish, yes my house is turning into a zoo!

Hi AV,

I would do the same, pick out the ones which are being bullied. I think they both look gorgous, but being male, does that mean that they're going to meow like lost kittens during April-May and August-September breeding seasons like Dr Nat said earlier? Or do they only do this, if hens are present? (Dr Nat?)

And hey I say the more the merrier when it comes to the wonderful animal world, when you are a dedicated animal lover.

Enjoy your newest members of your clan.

They will carry on even without having females in the aviary. I have two males in the bottom of my aviary and all year round you can hear them looking for the loves of their life.

Hey AV, These are both male chinese painted button male qualis, the one that keeps moving is a Normal, the other that is plucked looks to be split with the silver mutation which is these little guys:silver_pair.jpgLucky for you these little birds dont sound like a kitten stuck in the avairy, that would drive your puppies mental!!!oh oh I found what your little man is!!!! He is a Silver red breasted male, like this one!!! When his feathers grow back that isSilver_redbreasted_male.jpg

Great Ideas with the newspapers guys :D

Av - you are a softy :D .. I would have picked them too ... However I wouldn't have let that guy speak to me that why :hap: ....Congrats on the New feathered ones and the soon to be fishes :D
