hi all!

yesterday was a very special day :) peanut came out of quarantine and was allowed time out of the cage to play with casper for the first time! they seemed to get on okay and have spent the day together in caspers cage (much bigger) which will eventually (i hope) be their permanent home together.

however i do have some concerns! i cannot tell by the cere colour what sex casper truely is. both of their ceres are a shade of blue but caspers looks whiter some days. i was hoping to judge their sex by watching their behaviour together, but at the moment i am very confused! here are my observations:

1. casper will sing to peanut but his vocalisations are more clicky and whistley than normal.

2. casper will head bob to peanut while making these noises.

3. they will both walk around the floor eating up loose seeds and will then approach eachother and feed eachother - taking it in turns.

4. casper seems to enjoy pecking at or trying to preen peanut and will stretch his body out so that he is taller than peanut.

5. at times they will both put a foot on the other ones tummy or wing.

6. casper is a lot more aggressive than peanut and wants everything that peanut has - ie i put two seed pots next to eachother so that they have one each, but casper will purposely try to steal the one that peanut has, just to annoy him!

7. they seem to be feeding eachother a lot (is this bad?) casper seems to demand food by opening his beak and making what i can only describe as 'goose noises'

:bluebudgie: i dont know what to think of this! are they both male or have i got a female aswell? (Laughing out loud) they are enjoying some mashed hard boiled egg mixed with grated carrot at the moment - i have never given them this before and they both seem to LOVE it! they dug straight in and can also entertain themselves by flicking it at eachother!

It sounds like your budgies are full of personality and character and are getting along great! And that's good! I'm not sure about the female/male thing though... hopefully someone else can solve that one for you!

they are extremely funny to watch jess! at the moment casper is being a little show off cuz he has a guest in his cage! he has been prancing around and playing with his toys while peanut just sits there completely unamused by his antics!

its as if casper's saying 'look what i can do and you cant' and sticking his tongue out! hehehe :(Laughing out loud):

sorry but does anyone know about behaviour and stuff? any advice will be GREATLY appreciated! today they were viciously trying to pull eachothers toe nails out - casper demands food and if he/she doesnt get it from peanut he will bite and snap and generally be very horrible. any ideas?

hi all!

yesterday was a very special day  :)  peanut came out of quarantine and was allowed time out of the cage to play with casper for the first time! they seemed to get on okay and have spent the day together in caspers cage (much bigger) which will eventually (i hope) be their permanent home together.

Hooray for Peanut! If they do stay in Casper's cage, you should watch them closely at first. Some birds have territorial issues with their cage, and since Peanut is the newcomer, Casper may tolerate it for awhile, then decide he really doesn't want another bird in 'his' cage. Lots of birds don't care, but some do.

however i do have some concerns! i cannot tell by the cere colour what sex casper truely is. both of their ceres are a shade of blue but caspers looks whiter some days. i was hoping to judge their sex by watching their behaviour together, but at the moment i am very confused! here are my observations:

1. casper will sing to peanut but his vocalisations are more clicky and whistley than normal.

It's probably a birdie greeting. Mine do that to each other too, males to males and males to females.

2. casper will head bob to peanut while making these noises.

This is normal bird behavior too. It's a greeting as well as birdie foreplay in older birds. Mine do it to me too, males as well as females.

3. they will both walk around the floor eating up loose seeds and will then approach eachother and feed eachother - taking it in turns.

Again, normal behavior. Especially since Casper is young, it's normal to beg food from another bird. When mine were small, the babies even used to feed each other. I think it is a normal part of their growing up.

4. casper seems to enjoy pecking at or trying to preen peanut and will stretch his body out so that he is taller than peanut.

5. at times they will both put a foot on the other ones tummy or wing.

I think they are testing their limits here. When my birds experience dominance issues, one or both will try to become taller than the other, and will try to put a foot on the other one. I'm sure they have not established a pecking order yet.

6. casper is a lot more aggressive than peanut and wants everything that peanut has - ie i put two seed pots next to eachother so that they have one each, but casper will purposely try to steal the one that peanut has, just to annoy him!

This is part of establishing the pecking order.

7. they seem to be feeding eachother a lot (is this bad?) casper seems to demand food by opening his beak and making what i can only describe as 'goose noises'

Goose noises? I love that- I've never heard it described in quite that way before! I think this is just juvenile behavior, and ties back into # 3.

:)  i dont know what to think of this! are they both male or have i got a female aswell? lol they are enjoying some mashed hard boiled egg mixed with grated carrot at the moment - i have never given them this before and they both seem to LOVE it! they dug straight in and can also entertain themselves by flicking it at eachother!

Some of the behaviors you described could also be attributed to male/female attraction, but since you cannot for certain tell the sex of both of them yet, I think it is more that they are just getting to know each other. Isn't it great to just sit and watch them? If you could get a closeup of both of their ceres, I could give it my best guess as to what sex they are. It's hard to tell in your signature. From my experience, Casper's behavior sounds like hen behavior (demanding food, not wanting to share food from the cups, and wanting to be the dominant bird for example), but could also be construed as the first bird showing dominance over the newcomer. Sometimes it's hard to tell what they are doing.

thank you for that rainbow! unfortunately i dont have a digi camera yet so cant get pictures at the moment, but i will go and pester my dad and see if i can borrow his this evening :) hehehe

and they are very funny and interesting to watch! i didnt realise that budgies could make goose noises before we put them together :(Laughing out loud): and he puts his whole body forward on the perch when he does it aswell, very much like an angry goose!

thanks for your help again rainbow, at least i know that i dont have anything major to worry about at the moment, hopefully one day they will learn to live peacefully together! - just have to keep and eye on the bickering! :yelling:

Sometimes when they lean forward and make the "goose" noises :lol: they will also start bobbing their little heads very quickly and their little wings start to quiver. It is really cute to watch!

There always cute to watch and i think your budgie may be a male and when you get pictures please show...I also noticed when they are calm and there is less light they are sooo tame!

hehe :(Laughing out loud): the fighting has calmed down a lot now and i think they are finally starting to get along together! brilliant news! casper even let peanut play with 'his' olympic rings the other day and didnt even bat an eyelid! :) when i first put them together he would chase peanut away! sometimes i would hear a little thud and come running into the room to find little peanut on the floor having been pushed off his perch! poor old peanut :) they are asleep at the moment, but they sleep at opposite ends of the cage (Laughing out loud), not snuggling yet but hopefully they will soon!

i love it when casper cocks his head to the side expecting peanut to preen under his chin hehe such an adorable little face - gotta get a picture of that!

I love how cute budgies look when they preen each other! :) Budgies are the cutest things! ;)

Once my sister came running to me Steven Steven Sky is biting Sunshine!...ya you guessed it they were preening!

Aww I'm glad to here the fighting has calmed down. I'm glad I didn't have to worry about that, Pie was on the bottom of the ladder when it came to rank and he took one look at Freckle and bowed to her power, (Laughing out loud).

The ladies are always the dominant ones!!! ;)

they are asleep at the moment, but they sleep at opposite ends of the cage lol, not snuggling yet but hopefully they will soon!

Mine rarely sleep right next to each other, especially not the hens. They need their personal space, I guess. There usually is a bit of bickering that goes on when they get covered at night until they sort things out.
