Exhibition Quality Budgies

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am a newbie from Sydney and I am keen to start breeding and exhibiting budgies. I have surfed the www and have found information regarding Auctions that take place. I am wondering how much I would expect to pay for budgies to commence breeding in the novice section. I am sure that there a myriad of variable affecting the price, but some general advice would be handy.

Also how much do the top budgies go for? I think that the enjoyable aspects would be improving your stock by slective breeding and not just throwing money at top birds. but an idea of the cost for the top birds would be nice to know.

Thanks in advance

Geoff

Hi Geoff,

I am a novice show breeder and birds I have bought have varied from $20 to $50 for the average good breeding bird. Top price I have paid was $230 for a hen. At auctions the higher quality birds can go froma couple of thousand upwards.

If you have joined a Budgerigar club...make it known you are after birds to start out and the breeders will put you onto some good culls of theirs.

Hi Geoff,

What part of Sydney are you from?

Hi Geoff,

Hi Ikon,

I live at Wattle grove, near liverpool.

Cheers

What you need to do is go along to your local club meeting. I believe we have some members here on the forum that are close to you so they can advise on when the meetings occur. You then join the club and buy some birds, or if you like I (like most show breeders) have birds that I sell all year round (I'm at Kogarah).

Prices for show birds start at about $25 and as Kaz said go well into the thousands. I dont recomend you spend too much at the beginning.

Hi Geoff ....

I just joined a club and got my first pair of budgies :)

Here --->IS A LIST OF CLUBS in NSW

Good luck with it all :D

Best thing to do is join a club first. Go to some meeting, Go to some shows and see who is winning in the intermediate section. Find out if they breed the type of variety you are looking for and go and talk to them about some birds.

Make it clear to them that you are starting out and let them know how much you have budgeted for birds.

As a beginner, i'd budget $100 per pair. and start out with three pair. (not saying that it will cost you $300 it might be less)

When neat and i went to the meeting the first time we got the same reaction -like we were going to rob them or something!

I dont know what our club is called neat would but they are really friendly and helpful it is held in blacktown We brought our first show pair last week for an absolute steal! I know it is a bit of a hike but its worth it just ask neat!

I have been a member of St George for a year and most people are willing to help (I have not come across anyone who hasn't yet). We normally have a guest speaker at the meetings our September meeting we have Dr Kim Fryer coming to talk about Avian Health. Visitors are welcome to come in and listen and chat to the breeders after and before the talk (takes place as the birds are being judged).

We have some good experienced breeders and as Daz recomends, pick a couple of breeders and buy their culls (The breeders I buy from sell me their culls from $35 each and they have similar bloodlines).

I find auctions are a bit pricey unless your an established breeder and want to bring a particular breeders bird in as an outcross.

Hey Geoff,

Kaz was right, I live in Wattle Grove, down near the shops. You?

I am at the same situation as you. Not sure what club to join. let me know what you decided on

Not far from the shops myself!!! I am off Australis. I might go and have a look at the Club at St George, 19 Sep 08. Would be intersted to maybe chat prior to the event and share transport(if you are interested and believe me when I say I am not an axe murderer)..
