Posted August 22, 200816 yr Well Betty has finally decided that she is ready and so I think poor pluto has his work cut out for him. I put Betty in a cage with a box awhile ago with Jack and although she was in and out of the box all day and would accept some preening and kisses from Jack she refused him anythng else so when Roxy was out of quarantine I put Jack in with her praying for some beautiful grey babies. It was not to be, when I took a good look at them all yesterday Roxy had gone out of condition. Meanwhile I had put Pluto in with Betty to keep her company but once again Betty would only accept some kisses and cuddles. So I decided to remove Jack and Roxy from the breeding cabinet and put Betty and Pluto in there instead and my god did Betty change her tune, she just about dived under Pluto begging for it, poor Pluto didn't know what to do, but this morning I wake up to some strange noise coming from the spare room, so i got up to check it out and I am telling you Pluto worked it out and was going at it hammer and tongs. YAY finally things might be moving along so heres hoping that I will have some eggs soon.
August 23, 200816 yr I love the way you said that Fantasic news .. PLENTY OF FERTILE EGG BLESSING FOR YOU!!!!
August 24, 200816 yr Author nothing is happenig just yet but I am watching for ohhhhh and as I was checking on them today I caught Jordan in her box checking things out (she had been in the breeding cage with Eddie for a couple of weeks now and hasn't even looked at it till now) so fingers crossed
August 25, 200816 yr nothing is happenig just yet but I am watching for ohhhhh and as I was checking on them today I caught Jordan in her box checking things out (she had been in the breeding cage with Eddie for a couple of weeks now and hasn't even looked at it till now) so fingers crossed That is a good sign. Do you have nesting material in the nest box? I use wood shavings. The hen tends to take them all out but this can help her with her nesting behaviour. You just keep replacing them. Usually once the chicks hatch she'll leave them in there. :hap:

August 27, 200816 yr Author okay so an update on my pairs, Betty and Pluto are doing well I am hoping for eggs by the weekend, will hens get abit quieter before laying? Eddie and Jordan are a different story, although I caught Jordan checking out the box the other day since then she hasn't been near it and she ignored Eddie completely all they did was sit there in the cage with the occasional fly back and forth, so I decided to take Eddie out and put in Mack, she gave a half hearted protest when he tried to say hi but within 10 minutes he was feeding her, I think if she is showing no signs of breeding soon i will take them out and try again later. Jordan is a normal green (possible split for greywing) and Mack is a greygreen greywing if this a successful what can I expect?
September 7, 200816 yr Author Betty laid her first egg today finally I was so close to taking them out so i am glad I waited abit longer now YAY
September 8, 200816 yr Congrats on the first egg, I hope that you have many more to come! Hopefully this will spurr your other pairs into action as well!
September 9, 200816 yr Author Betty's 2nd egg arrived on time today and Jordan has followed suit and laid her first today aswell
September 9, 200816 yr Congrats on the arrival of egg 2 and the first for your other pair. Ill cross my fingers and toes for fertility.
September 14, 200816 yr Author OH NO I don't think Betty sat on her eggs last night cause they are really cold compared to Jordans, and she seems to have stopped laying with just 3 eggs, she was sitting on them yesterday, if she doesn't sit on them soon do you think it is to late for them? should I put them in with Jordan? what do I do?
September 14, 200816 yr She may not have begun to incubate her eggs yet. Not all hens incubate from the first egg...some wait till they have at least three and some wait till they have more. Some people think their hens are incubating when all they have done so far is sit in the box to lay their eggs. Too soon to panic :budgiedance:
September 15, 200816 yr Author okay thanks Kaz, I knew about the third egg thing but I assumed she had started sitting cause she is in there all the time day and night, for the last 5 days and she laid the last egg four days ago, I checked on her a little while ago and she is in there now so hopefully she hasn't finished and is laying another one. Jordan is definately sitting on hers (egg 4 due today) she has been from about day2 so I thought I would have a go at candleing them, egg 1 looks fertile, there is tiny red lines starting in the yolk, the other 2 show no signs yet but I didn't really think they would. Thanks Liv and Ditto on yours too :budgiedance:
September 24, 200816 yr Author okay and update on my pairs Betty laid a total of 3 eggs, I candled them the other day and found that only the last egg she laid seemed to be fertile, so I made the decision to foster that egg to Jordan and remove Betty and Pluto from the breeding cabinate, I want to put Pluto down with Poppy in a few months and Betty was looking abit worse for wear, they are now in the aviary and look much happier. Jordan and Mack on the other hand have 5 very fertile eggs, she sits on them almost all day and he is often in there keeping her company, the eggs are due to start hatching saturday or sunday I think. I candled the Egg from Betty today and found that it was clear so I removed it. The new girls I got from my friend last weekend have been paired up I put Arial, (green opaline) with Eddie (normal green) Willow (Greygreen) with Hulk (greygreen) and India (Grey Dom Peid) with Jack (normal grey) so here is hoping they get busy I'll update with pics of babies as they start to arrive
September 24, 200816 yr Oh Mate - HULK - Good luck , I like the looks of your pairings - Yes keep us updates
September 24, 200816 yr You got the new hens only last weekend and now they are breeding with existing birds ?
September 24, 200816 yr Author Hey Kaz, the new girls came from a friend of mine who had them for 6 weeks beforehand, she doesn't have any birds herself and put them through the whole quarantine process before she brought them over, so I figured it was safe to put them in with the boys, if this is not a good idea please let me know and I will seperate them.
September 24, 200816 yr You need to read up again on why you need to quarantine. Each budgie can carry and live with its own set of "issues"..... its when they come together that a carrier who lives happily with their own issues may then infect the partner. Please re-read our quarantine information. Secondly stress equals illnesses....stress is brought about by ........... 1. being caught 2. Being moved #. new home 4. new diet and with new diet comes forced moult. 5. new conditions 6. new friends and new pecking orders to establish 7. breeding which is high on the sress levels list All new budgies should have a settling in period of time to adjust to all new conditions. QUARANTINE is a MUST and especially you dont put new birds straight into breeding conditions without time for adjustment and time for proper quarantine.
