Posted August 21, 200816 yr Hello all. I have another question. I have read budgies get iodine from soil/dirt. Is their any vegetables that contain iodine? I have been to 4 pet shops and none of them sell iodine blocks, I have 3 left but the guy I bought them from does not have any left. Where do you all get your iodine blocks from? THanks very much
August 21, 200816 yr okay Yeah Wild budgies get their source from soil ...There are beetroot, radish, parsley, potatoes, fish, oatmeal and bananas You can make your own Iodine bells ... Look under the recipe section----- HERE IS THE LINKhttp://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=18426
August 21, 200816 yr I give my birds fresh grass with the roots and a big clump of soil too - they LOVE it and its really good for them - just got to keep them well wormed
August 21, 200816 yr Author Thanks very much for the replies. Is just normal growing green grass that hasnt been sprayed good for them? or are you talking about the grass that you grow from bird seed. I have read that doxycyline is a treatment for a budgie disease but I forget which disease it was. I think it was psitacosis or respitory problem's. I know you can get doxycycline for humans at any chemist, is this the same drug that is used for budgies?
August 21, 200816 yr Yes, I just carfully pull out grass from our garden (that is chemical free) and give it as it is. I normally do it after a rain so the soil is nice and soft and the grass is as clean as it can get! My birds LOVE fresh moist soil from after a rain!
August 21, 200816 yr Good stuff Liv .. I will add make sure that the grass hasn't been mowed :hap: The Doxy is for infections it's an Anti Biotic I am not sure if it is the same But i wouldn't administer treatment with out knowing what the cause is - This could be a fatal mistake
August 21, 200816 yr Author Thanks for the replies. Is fresh grass okay that hasnt been mowed in over a month okay? If not I will have to grow my own grass as I mow all the grass on the land. I will look into the doxycycline further. I read that it fixed respitory problems and one of my budgies has one. If I cant use the doxycycline I will take him to the vet again. I have taken 3 birds to the vet this week.. The vet will probably think I am mistreating the birds.
August 21, 200816 yr I use the grass that is growing in our garden bed as weeds - it is everywhere at the moment :hap: . Mown grass is good for nothing other than compost :hap:
August 21, 200816 yr Author So grass that is growing and green that hasnt been mowed in a month is still deadly? I will have to grow my own then. Yet another question... I have been looking at a few bird suppliers and I found this: OXY-B soluble broad spectrum antibiotic powder. It is a treatment for treatment for chronic respiratory disease in birds. Has anyone ever heard/used this in their budgies? I want to buy it but I am just making sure its okay.
August 21, 200816 yr So grass that is growing and green that hasnt been mowed in a month is still deadly? I will have to grow my own then. No, that grass will be fine :hap: - I thought you meant grass cuttings or freshly mown grass, that's a no no. What are you treating?? If you have an illness in your flock its best to take a couple of your sick birds to the vet and get it diagnosed. Wrong use of antibiotics can have horrible effects in the long run. It's not just the antibiotic, but its also the length of treatment that is vital too. Edited August 21, 200816 yr by **Liv**
August 21, 200816 yr Author One of my budgies has a brown stain above his cere and that means a respiratory infection.( He is in his own cage) He still sings and eats its just that stain. I was just seeing if that specific medicine could treat him, I will just go to the vet again. Thanks Edited August 21, 200816 yr by maesie spelling
August 21, 200816 yr I don't know much about those antibiotics - I do everything i can to avoid them. The staining above the cere can also be a vitamin deficiency, an allergy, a symptom of psittacosis (sp??) or a respiratory infection (viral or bacterial) - Some of those need antibiotics (for very different time lenghts), but viruses, allergies and vitamin deficiencies will not benefit from antibiotics - this is why a vet is very important :hap: Good luck and let us know how you go.
August 22, 200816 yr Author Hello Sorry to bother you all again.. I bought a vitamin and minderal supplement today and I want to see if anyone has used it and liked it. It is called VITAMIN & MINERAL SUPPLEMENT, The brand is called SCIENCE PRODUCTs, The avian specialist brand. The supplement contains: Vitamin A Cholecalciferol Dl-Alpha-Tocopherly acelate (vit E) Nicotinamide Calcium Pantothenate Riboflavin Cyanocobalamin Pyridoxine hydrochloride Asorbic Acid Folic acid0 Citric acid Magnesium suplhate Zinc sulphate Ferrous sulphate Copper sulphate Sodium molybdate Cobalt chloride silica I went to the pet shop and asked for calcivet (A calcium supplement for birds) and they gave me this instead. Does this do the same thing as calcivet? Thanks
August 22, 200816 yr Pet shops What you have is a vitamin and mineral supplement (as you know) and it is great for your budgies. I give it to my birds twice a week. But, It is not the same as calcivet. I have AVI-CAL which is the same as calcivet. It's main ingredient is calcium - also has some vit D3 and magnesium.
August 22, 200816 yr Author okay thanks very much. So I would give them the vitamin and mineral supplement 2 times a week and I will buy some avi-cal for them. CAn the vitamin and mineral supplement be fed to breeding budgies?

Thanks Pearce try and keep in the back of your mind that petshops are not the best place for meds for birds and when you go shopping for something you have been advised to use ( on here ) try not to be persuaded into other things you dont need. Thats a WOW OF A LIST of artificial chemicals in that batch of vitamin supplement. I wouldnt use it. Keeping it simple is the better way to go. You are looking for solutions for your sick birds and treating when you havent a real diagnosis. At the very least try and get a seasoned budgie breeder to take a look at your birds and advise you. Advice that doesnt include giving good money to the petshop on anything the petshop chooses to sell you.
August 22, 200816 yr Author I went to the petshop for calcivet for the breeding birds, not for a cure to blueys respitory problem. I am taking him to the vet this afternoon... I was checking if the other items on ebay were okay here before I went and bought them, As I was adviced they were not okay, I did not buy them. Sorry.

I was just trying to explain how petshops sell you things you usually dont go in there for. I just didnt explain myself well enough.

Thanks Yes that is a good price - I got mine for about $12 new. I would worry about ebay though as this stuff seems to have a failry short useby. - perhaps ask the seller for useby details.
August 22, 200816 yr Author Hello Good news. I took bluey to the vet this afternoon and thankfully he does not have psittacosis or a respitory infection. The vet tested his droppings and checked his breathing and he is fine. The only thing that needs fixing is that he is a little to fat, A little excersise will fix this. He has not been getting excersise because one of his flight feathers was broken so he couldnt fly very well, The fet has fixed this and now he flys better. The causes for the brown stain could either be: 1. A vitamin A deficiancy, the vet gave me a medication to treat this. 2. He seems to think that bluey has been through a moult and after a moult budgies can sometimes get that stain above their ceres. I did not notice bluey going through a moult though. P.S juggernaut is doing better now aswell. Thanks very much for all the help.
August 22, 200816 yr Thats all good information to know pearce....what the vet told you. Hope all starts to pick up a bit for you and your birds
