August 20, 200816 yr Author It is so heartbreaking to see this gorgeous creature gradually get weaker and weaker. Personally I dont think we're doing enough to try and save him. Let's hope and pray someone does something real soon or we are going to lose this beautiful mammel. :hap: Sorry, who is Collin the Whale? Colin is a baby humpback whale that has been orphaned in the oceans of Australia. It has been nuzzling up to yachts in Pittwater Sydney trying to suckle the boats thinking it is his mother. Some experts are saying there can be nothing done but then others are saying we should at least try and feed him! In the meantime while the "experts" are deciding just what to do, poor Colin is getting closer and closer to dying of starvation! AAAARRGGGHHH - I am getting so frustrated - will someone just get out there and do something! (Sorry, I just had to vent my anger!)
August 20, 200816 yr Sadly I guess things like this go on in the ocean everyday, just we don’t see it happening…nature isn’t so compassionate as humans, but I guess it has its plan, it’s a mystery beyond us. When things go on like this in nature there’s probably a reason behind it, maybe the mother didn’t have the right motherly instinct, so in natures plan she wont produce successful prodigy to continue her line. Survival of the fittest. And I guess the government wonders who will pay for all the milk if they start feeding it. Often I think if we interfere too much in nature we prevent & even hinder its plan that only the strongest go on to produce. To us it’s sad.
August 20, 200816 yr I agree entirely with you Norm but at the same time I have to disagree to some extent. The problem is that many of these species have already become seriously jeopardised by the activities of humans and we now need to start thinking about trying to save every one we can. A baby humpback would be an excellent way to start as I think they are fairly tough compared to other whale species. Jenene wildlife Victoria is appealing for people to contact them to ask them to do more, the following is their email and I am positive they would be happy for me to put it up here: On Sunday August 17 a young humpback whale named ‘Colin’, was discovered separated from its mother in Sydney’s Pittwater. It is very young and still needs milk. National Parks and Wildlife rescue teams have tried unsuccessfully to assist the lost, weak calf. Unfortunately they have now taken up a negative attitude and are talking of euthanasing the baby whale despite people in Sydney saying they believe they can feed it. When people first attempted to rescue stranded whales in the early 1980s, despite negative attitudes from the National Parks and Wildlife Service, the public refused to give up and always maintained a positive attitude. This led to the establishment of successful State Government whale rescue plans, which have become part of our culture. We now need to learn how to save young whales and shooting them is not the answer. Please help this baby whale by contacting NSW Premier, Morris IEMMA and the Sydney Morning Herald. Express your outrage at the suggestion of euthanasia for this baby whale and ask that everything possible be done to feed and save it. Sydney Morning Herald(02) 9282 2833 newsdesk@smh.com.au Premier Morris IEMMA(02) 9584 1788 lakemba@parliament.nsw.gov.au This is really urgent. Please act now.
August 21, 200816 yr They had talk of attaching a teat to the boat it continues to circle, I don't know why, but for some reason the way that Colin is acting towards it I think it would help. I'd willingly give up all my savings to feed him, and i'm sure there's many others out there that would also. I don't think funding is the problem, it's all the fighting over what is right and wrong that's stopping the progress on the decision to save him Poor little guy, I hope they feed him soon!
August 21, 200816 yr Ahhh I hear this on the radio this morning ... It will cost $5,000 a DAY to feed this whale. Which needs to be feed for the next year that is $ 1,780,000 AUD just to feed it ... It has a 10 - 15% survival rate at the moment. I am all for Animals I love them but I am fence sitting on this one .. BECAUSE is it healthy?? If the mother left it Why? is it dying from something? If we spend that money a day feeding it will it still survive? IF the bloo dy Japanese stop KILLING THEM they would be more off them - I'd love to keep this dying species alive but the odds are extremely against it ... The funds could be used to help our kids here with quality educations ( as public system is suffering) Hospitals and Dr's and Nurses we are sooo under staffed we are turning away the sick because there isn't enough beds - So I hope that we can do something but I am sure the government is weighing it's pros and cons This is my opinion which by free will I am entitled too so if you are offended you shouldn't be
August 21, 200816 yr I hadn't heard about it until now - Poor thing I can see both sides of the situation too. I just hope he doesn't suffer which ever way it goes
August 21, 200816 yr They were talking about euthanasia this morning - as he isn't healthy? But that is radio for you I hope that he is okay
August 21, 200816 yr Euthinasia is the next step, other than that try and get some airforce or navy equipment i think they said and taking him out to sea and seeing if there's a humpback pod that'll adopt him going past, but really, what're the chances of A - them coming past at all B - them adopting him and C - him keeping up with them in his weakened state basically it's feed him or euthinasia options atm... August 21, 200816 yr Yep - It's cold here at the moment but the weather is warming up ... So there could be a chance that there are pods out there more towards the Coffs Harbour part of NSW
August 21, 200816 yr Hate to say it people, but it is an debate you are all having, but there is nothing that can be done here. I saw an interview with a Seaworld specialist who said that it is not possible to reprduce the mothers milk so that cannot be done. They tried moving it out to sea, but it just returned, so that plan was not working. In the end, they will have to euthanise. All those who say no to euthanising it, then you are choosing the opetion of watching it slowly starve to death. Not really that humane. I am all for the green approach to the world, but trying to do that which cannot be done is not smart. We are not talking about a small bird here we can keep alive and crop feed a formula that we know will help it. Do we know why it got seperated from its mother? maybe it was not well and mother knew. For all who say that is not possible, any breeder will tell you that they have seen a mother budgie not feed or "dispose" of a young bird that was not well. Maybe mother whale knows best? We, as a species, pin a lot of emotional baggage onto things. It is both our greatest gift, and our greatest curse.

Maybe the parents do know best and who are we to interfere. Not that I'm saying don't try but it makes you wonder. Some things are just meant to be
August 21, 200816 yr Dave I am glad that you said that ... Makes me feel better .. LIV did he die??? I need to watch the news lol ... I spend too much time on BBC
August 21, 200816 yr Dave I am glad that you said that ... Makes me feel better .. LIV did he die??? I need to watch the news lol ... I spend too much time on BBC Yeah, they said on the news that he had been put down - i hope it was humane. A big animal like that had to be hard to euthanise
August 21, 200816 yr okay got some news .. Here is a news report on him http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,24219281-29277,00.html It states that he will be euthanised tonight as he is suffering poor health infected shark wounds and etc .. he is also 2 - 3 years old
August 21, 200816 yr I'm sure we ALL love animals and had hoped Colin would survive. However I agree that Euthanasia is better than him starving to death slowly. I also feel that unless his mother has died and he's been orphaned, most animals have a natural way of discarding those offsprings which are not healthy or unlikely to survive anyway. It happens to birds throwing certain sickly babies out of the nest, and even dogs will discard sick or weak puppies ...our beautiful Roxie, Golden Retriever, was a great mum, had 14 puppies (2 litters) and shunned and eventually sat on and smothered one of her puppies, we thought accidentally, but they are too clever for this. It was perhaps not meant to survive and she knew this. So perhaps Colin would not have survived even if mum was still around. No one will ever know. But I strongly believe putting him to sleep gently is better than the sadness and despair he must be feeling now. Colin. Again.. my opinion only. Edited August 21, 200816 yr by thk
August 21, 200816 yr I'm just a softy and the hole hopeless mess just makes me feel sad.
