Posted August 20, 200816 yr I have noticed that a few of my budgies in the aviary have been rubbing their beaks on the perches and have given them a rough look to their beaks. Is this a indictation that they have scaly face or normal behaviour, some of the ones doing it are moulting.
August 20, 200816 yr Not sure exactly. Could be scaley mite?? How is their diet?? if they are moulting, they might need a vitamin boost.
August 20, 200816 yr Scaly face is something you see upon close inspection but not usually due to behaviour. All budgies rub their beaks on branches
August 20, 200816 yr Mac is doing the same Deb. He is currently ( FINALLY ) going thru his first molt and is itchy
August 21, 200816 yr Author i was checking the budgies this morning and i have never had scaly face before in my aviary so i am not sure what it looks like in early stage. I am thinking it is scaly face so i have took a photo of one of the budgies, there are a few looking similar. can someone confirm for me if it is or not.
August 21, 200816 yr It looks like scaley face Deb. I would treat all birds that are in the same cage as this one, even if they dont appear to have the symptons.
August 21, 200816 yr I agree a vet visit is in order. The flakey look has extended to the bottom of the cere, and that should not flake.
August 21, 200816 yr Yeah agree scaly Face - Like Ikon said treat ALL birds that are in the same cage has it. Also do their feet too Change any perches to fresh ones I will add to Deb It's good to see How well you are intune with your birds to catch this quickly!!!!
August 21, 200816 yr Author I have had a busy morning, i caught all the birds and put them in small cages. I removed all the food and water containers from the aviary and spray the aviary and perches with mite spray. would i still need to change the perches? I have treated the birds that have scaly face with baby oil and when i get some ivermectin i will do the rest of the budgies.
August 21, 200816 yr If you have sprayed should be fine mate I too did a clean out of the aviary too It was a cleaning morning for me too
August 21, 200816 yr Author My problem was i had already cleaned it and the chook pen early this morning so i after you guys confirmed it was scaly face i had to go and do it again.
August 21, 200816 yr Poor thing... I HATE CLEANING ... But for the Health of it i do it and the house lol
August 25, 200816 yr I have a question. I'm trying to word it and I keep trying because I think I sound a bit like a dill. Does scaly face only come from one bird to another or are those mites in the environment? (like fleas) I'm thinking it's like kids with head lice and they have to catch them from one another.

They can live in the environment (branches, nestboxes etc) and also be transmitted from one bird to another though feeding each other. It can lay dormant in a bird for a long time. It normally only affects birds who are a run down.
August 26, 200816 yr If you use Ivermectin to treat your birds for scaly mite you don’t need to do anything else. As this mite lives on the birds, but if you have a cage without birds that has had the mite, it can live for something like a year without a host, as I think most mites can do that. But if birds are present, but treated with Ivermectin they will feed on them & die. Also this mite can infest poultry too ..how far away from your Budgies are they?

The chook pen is 3 metres from the aviary, how would i know if the chooks have mites, their beaks look fine. You have a good memory Norm to remember i have chooks, there are so many members here i am not keep trait of what other pets besides budgies people have.

That's pretty close, I have chooks but they are a lot further away than that, other diseases that chooks are immune to could spread to the birds as well. The mite will show up on chooks legs, with rough looking scales, in bad cases they are crippled, but some breeds don't show it that much. As Macka says you can treat them with Ivermectin too, but you would probably need a couple of drops on them. I didn't remember you had chooks Deb, you said you cleaned the chooks out too.
September 4, 200816 yr Author I have been using babyoil to treat the scaly face and all but one budgie have improved. I have been reading in a budgie book that you can use dettol and oil mixed together to treat scaly face. Has anyone used dettol on budgies and is it safe?
September 4, 200816 yr Deb are you able to get to a vet to get the Ivermectin ? If you are going to use detol, make sure that you dilute it? I wouldn't use it but that is me though ... I am sure that there are others out there that are more experienced in this that will be able to give you an answer or a recipe
September 4, 200816 yr Author I am getting some Ivermectin, just waiting for it to arrive. Just wondering what else i can use to treat her when the oil is not working while i am waiting for the Ivermectin. i have had to get Ivermectin from another member because the vets near me will not give it to you to use on budgies. If you are getting ivermec from someone other than a vet make sure that it is mixed at the right dilution rate. The rate that it is used for dogs or cats would kill a budgie. The correct dilution rate for budgies is 1% and the birds should be given 1 drop on the back of the neck. A little olive oil would help until you get the ivermec
