My Budgie Has Lost Alot Of Blood.

Hi

Today I went out to the avairy (their are currently 25 budgies,2 cockatiels and 5 quails in their) And I found blood all over the perch and the ground. I looked at one of my australian budgies named juggernaut, above his left leg their is blood everywhere and a few feathers are missing. I moved him into a smaller cage and I have called 2 vets. Both vets cannot see him until tomorow afternoon. Is their anything I can do until tomorow? Bathe it in water or buy some cream for him? I have not touched anything yet as Water could hurt the area. I will try get pictures for you.

P.S. He can fly and eat normally and it does not look like he is in pain, im just worried because he has lost alot of blood for a budgie.. I am going to ring a few vets now that are outside of my area and see if they can fit him in today. Until then, their must be somthing I can do.

Thanks

Put a warm light on the cage use a 25 to 40 watt globe.

Put white pepper (or flour) on the wound and apply pressure until the bleeding stops.

Let him rest in the cage with the warm light for now while you get hold of a vet.

You said that their are some feathers missing, could some of the blood be coming from broken feathers, if so you need to find the broken feathers and pull the rest of it out.

Should I bathe him in water first to get rid of the blood? He is not bleeding anymore their is just blood everywhere.

Has the blood come from the wing??Also. Batheing it will cause the bleeding to start agian. Just leave it for now

He is missing feathers above his right leg. He is missing a toe nail on his right foot. Could that be what all the blood is coming from? He has blood on his face also, like he has ripped a feather or his toenail out himself and got blood all over him.

Here are some pictures, they are bad quality.

He looks like he has been attacked :P

I would keep him warm and quiet until you get him to a vet.

You can put betadine on any visible wounds.

He will probably need some antibiotics - especially if he has been bitten by a rodent.

No rats/mice can get in my avairy but maybe it was one of my cockatiels/budgies. I dont have nesting boxes in the avairy anymore so I dont see what they would be fighting over. I will go buy some betadine now.

THanks for the help

I have been saying he - Sorry SHE :P

I feel it would be very unlikely that a Tiel or a budgie has done this - after 14 years of having the two breeds together i have never experienced any blood from a tiff.

Perhaps she got her leg caught in something??

I have put flour over her wound. Do I was the flour off or will it come off itself. I can get in to the vet at 11 am tomorow.

Thanks very much for all the help

Just leave the flour on the wounds. it helps clot the blood.

Good luck with the vets tomorrow. let us know how you go

I am going to have to find a vet that can fit me in now. Their is blood all over the cage again! I dont know how much blood she will have left she has lost an awful lot. She keeps picking at her feet so maybe she is causing all this blood loss.

If you have some white pepper smother her feet in it. She shouldn't peck at it then and it will stop the bleeding.

Remember to keep her warm and apply pressure to the wound.

You can also create a collar out of something to stop her from being able to peck at her feet

He might have been preening himself, and for some reason, cut himself. If he is missing a toenail, then yes, that would have started bleeding. he has probably then brushed that against his head.

If the bleeding from his toe, where the nail was, has stopped, then keep him in that cage where he is and keep an eye on him.

Is there any chance that your bird could have caught its foot somewhere?

Sorry, forgot to press add reply.

apology for this info not appearing earlier

Pearce,

regardless of what the vets say over the phone....if you were to go to ANY vet that is open right now and tell them you wont leave until someone sees your bird...they will fit you in. There's a big difference between an appointment and an emergency.

I went to the local vet and he checked her out. He said she has been bitten by somthing. He stopped the bleeding and put cream on the affected areas. Hopefully she will be okay, I have her in a cage by herself. I have a warm light on her aswell, should I turn the light off at night or leave it on all night for the warmth.

It looked like a bite to me.

I am so pleased you got to a vet.

Personally i don't like to leave the light on during the night as i feel it takes away valuable rest. Perhaps bring her cage inside for the night so she is out of the cold.

Her cage is inside and I usually have the heater on.

THanks very very much for all the help.

Man, sorry for what has happen to the poor little thing ...

First look at the picture, and how you have them all intogether has lead me to believe that she

was biten, Now if it was a teil it would be more worse - I am under the assumption (sp)

that she had a fight with another hen .. Even though there aren't nest boxes in there they will still fit

Over the Highest perch, over a male budgie, over a bit of fruit or veg - There is an "Queen B itch"

in your avairy, She should be removed

Now I could be mistaken But this has happened ( not to that extent) with me .. Gypsy and Mybird are the 2

Queens I have them in seperate avairies and haven't had a problem since ... ( man when they fight it is on!! )

I hope she gets better and agree with Kaz on leaving the light on for night warmth you can put a cover 1/2 over her

Good news, Juggernaut has not had any bleeding all night and she looks alot better physically. I have yet another question. I found one of my budgies dead this morning in the bottom of the avairy and I am wondering if it is related to juggernauts problem. I definitly do NOT have rats. Some of the feathers on her head were ripped off and her cere was red (covered in blood). If a budgie dies from the very cold weather or shock, It wouldn't bleed like this would it? Maybe their is a disease that is causing this. I will take the body to the vet to see if he knows whats causing it.

Thanks.

If there was a loss of blood the bird could have died from that. Could have been attacked from another bird. BUT budgies will peck at dead ones on the ground and cause those injuries also. Did it have a build up of poo on its butt ? Was it thin ?

No it had nothing on its bottom. It was puffed up. Maybe it was just a budgie that pecked it after it died. Cold weather kills budgies doesnt it. It didnt lose any blood, a little blood was just covering the cere and the head as though somthing had pecked it.

Thanks

Really cold weather only takes the sick ones. ANY BIRDS you see in the aviary not bright and alert and having fun should be brought inside and put in a cage with a lamp while you work out whats wrong and get them treated.
