August 28, 200816 yr Author both babies doing very well, mummy is doing a great job and they are growing at great speed, they are loud enough now that when Im sitting on the balcony I can hear there chirping! God only knows what miss ali or Buffy are doing though, I did the usual feed this afternoon, then checked on the babies, then did my usual tap on the door with Ali, When I opened the box I could see a funny mark on an egg so I pulled it out to have alook, her or Buffy had some how managed to dent and crack the egg, the crack had blood the whole way through it and a bit of clear fluid. The egg was beyond repair and the risk of it sticking to Ali was high, so I had to remove it!!!!!!! I was hoping that it was just hatching or something, but when I got the egg out and opened it, the baby was still alive but had alot of yoke left, I cannot say how upset I am, this poor little soul was not looking good and there was nothing that I could do!!! She even had red / clear eyes, So from 4 fertile eggs I now only have one! I know that Ali wants to have a brood so bad! and I want her to have one aswell, they will make beautiful babies!
August 28, 200816 yr It doesnt matter how many hundreds of eggs but the sight of a broken and "bleeding" egg and the potential chick lost will always make me very sad. I know how you feel
August 28, 200816 yr Well pippi congratulations on you little budgie chicks! :hap: Isn't it amazing that when they want to go down budgies really don't care where! I read that Daniel Lutoff's first budgies bred in a shoe box .... :hap:
August 29, 200816 yr Author hey guys well at 5 and three days of age the babies are still going strong, the parents are feeding well, dad seems to make a huge mess of himself in the process, his bib gets covered in food!!!! I thought that waiting for the eggs to hatch was hard but waiting to see what they are going to look like is just as hard!!!!! Here are a few more pics for you all! I hope that you like the looks of them so far, I will take some more photo's when they are abit older, but will keep you all updated!! Thanks again for all your support! How many days normaly! baby 1's eyes when you look at it are a funny colour, they are the same colour as a glass of Pinot noir (Im in hospitality, its the best that I could think of, also cause we had a bottle with dinner last night too)

September 3, 200816 yr Author hey guys, babies are doing well and starting to fluff up! I just have one small question though!!!!! How do I get the build up of poo off their little toes, I was going to try but then thought better of it without consulting you guys as I really couldnt deal with it if I took a toe off, or even a nail! I have cleaned the box out yet again, I dont remember the mess from when I last breed and I know why poowee she smelly, two babies make alot of mess I would hate to think how much 5 would make! Ali finally chucked her last egg also dead in shell :-( she has gone into the holding cage with her hubby for a 4 week rest period and then she will go back into the avairy, her choice of box will not be replaced until she has had atleast an 8 week break!

Use a cloth moistened with warm water. You are right though...toenails can come off pulling the dried poop off their toes. So the dampened cloth works well. :hap:
September 4, 200816 yr Agree with the warm water :hap: Sorry to hear that the other pair was no good . I am sure they will enjoy the rest :hap:
September 4, 200816 yr Author thanks guys, did the warm water thing worked a treat, alittle upset that I missed the chance to put the club rings on the birds though, even the 9 day olds chicks feet are to big for the ring now!
September 4, 200816 yr A show breeder told me that chicks who are just past ringing may still be rung. Clip toenails...not too short. Then dip foot in vinegar which restricts the blood vessels and shrinks the foot a little temporarily. Then oil the foot and try the legring.
September 4, 200816 yr Author Thanks kaz, I am game but not the game, that just scares the bejebers out of me, there mother will go into full flight attack mode if I tried that ;-) Is there a video online anywhere that shows me if I am doing it right? or can someone explain it in good old plain fashioned english?
September 4, 200816 yr Check the last topic by **** where she asks the same thing and Daz has shown her a link to how to legring.
September 4, 200816 yr Author Thank you Kaz, I checked the thread, found the link and gave it another go. As you said it’s not that hard! When you know what you are doing!!!! I managed to get baby two's ring on no problem, but baby one's leg has no hope, even with a small amount of shrinkage it wouldn’t go on. 11 days and it is just far too gone. I will now make sure that all babies are rung between 6 and 9 days depending on the size of the baby.
September 4, 200816 yr Good news The first time is always the hardest....all others become a piece of cake
September 5, 200816 yr Author I will take some photo's of the babies on the weekend as I am curious as to see what you guys think! They seem to be getting Yellow pin feathers on their wings and little tails?????????????? Ali and Buffy are mating like made rabbits, and there seems to be no stopping them, I even had my arm in the cage changing seed and water dishes this morning and they still kept going, its shameful.
September 5, 200816 yr LOL I got two rings on mine and then Head Case got his off somehow then I tried to olive oil to get it back on!
September 5, 200816 yr I am soo glad to hear that Buffy and Ali are doing want they were meant to LOL ... Congrats on the ringing too
