Posted August 19, 200816 yr Hi Guys, okay so this is my first attempt at breeding in 15 years, so I am totally eggcited, I went out and bought a double breeding cabinet, but the 2 pairs that I wanted to go down got the nest all ready and then nothing happened, after a 8 weeks of nothing I felt I couldn't let them stay in there any longer so put them back in the avairy, the hollow logs and feed dishes ended up being the nests of choice so I figured what the hey I throw in some box's and let them go! I only had to remove one pair from the avairy due to some serious fighting, but no missing parts so all was good! Pair one is Ali & Buffy Ali is an Albino Hen and Buffy is a Grey normal cock! Photo's below and Buffy Due to the fact that went to nest in the avairy and I didnt check the box's to regularly I cannot say when Ali laid the first egg but it would have been around the first (???????? thats a big think) She has laid 4 eggs in total, all are fertile So I am holding my breath at the moment for hatching, I am alittle nervous but excited at the same time! Pair 2 are Cole a Green normal cock and Violet a something normal, in the photo's she looks blue but in real life she looks kind of mauve/Violet. This pairing wasnt my choice it was there's totally, eveytime I put Cole with the Lutino hen that I got for him, he sulked and went nowhere near her for weeks, when I put Violet with the Grey Normal cock that I got for her she just about murdered him, so I just thought that I would let Cole and Violet have a go, mind you I have seen her turn the tail up to the greywing that I have in the avairy at the moment, so who knows what will happen there. Here are Cole and Violet: Violet has laid 5 eggs of which only 2 are fertile here she is with 4 off them: Egg 5 was laid on the 15th august which means at a guess that she laid the first on the 5th, I would also hazzard a guess that eggs 2 & 3 are the fertile ones so due date would be the 25th or 26th and 27th or 28th. Fingers crossed that all goes well!!!!
August 19, 200816 yr Cinnamon yes she is a violet as the Cinny genes washes ( dilutes the body color ) Lovely pairs indeed I bet you are eggcited Look forward to hearing updates Have you candle the eggs yet Oh P.S WELCOME :D
August 20, 200816 yr Author Hi all eggs have been candeled from both nests, Violet Definatly only has 2 fertile and Ali has all 4 fertile, am alittle frustrated as I cannot be sure as to the due dat of any of the eggs as I missed there laying dates, I know when Violets last was layed, so can work back from there, but as for Miss Ali well hers is all just guess work, so I can only assume as to when the are due to hatch, oh how I hope that hatch, I would say that Ali is the best sitter, the eggs look full apart from the air sack, so all I can do is hope and pray! I really want babies, I have had a total buying ban put on me by the other half, my last two were given to me by the neighbours who were moving back to Germany so they couldnt count!!!! The only way that I am aloud to increase my flock for now is via breeding!!!!! Fingers crossed it increases by atleast 6 Then I cant get in trouble, lol I will keep all posted and when they hatch I will post photo's
August 21, 200816 yr Author crossing everything for you ... Thanks Neat, I think that I will be devastated if none of them hatch, I know that they are fertile, but so much can go wrong in 18 to 21 days, even then after that is scary, I have hand raised birds in the past and did a rescue op for a Rainbow lorriket, 3 months back, poor featherless little tacker was laying in the grass at the park, he survived, I bearly did, my other half was most distrute at the chewing that he was doing just before he went to the Bird sanctuary, and my office, well lets just say the IT guys thought it was hilarious!!!
August 21, 200816 yr I am so excited for you. I cant wait to start breeding my birds again - this winter seems to be dragging on and on. I hope all goes well and thanks for your updates
August 21, 200816 yr Author Thanks for your support, I watched a great clip on candeling that I found on one of the posts here. I candel my eggs and when I find that they are fertile that is it, well anyway I watched the clip and thought way that is interesting, so I thought okay Ill have a look and see what I can see! Well now I am totally panicked cause I dont know if what I am seeing is normal or not, and am terrified that the babies are dying in the shell, I so wish now that I didnt candel at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
August 21, 200816 yr Welcome Pippi, I hope all goes well, just relax & chill out & it will all probably go okay.
August 21, 200816 yr Author thanks Norm, I have to say I seem to remember having alot more patience when I was breeding all that time ago, okay I was only 15 at the time and had other things to do like school and work,, but now my birds are my relax and destress after work! I too hope that all happens but soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ill just have to keep all crossed and maybe find a good book to take my mind off of it.
August 21, 200816 yr Good luck... I'm also a worry wort and very impatient. Just remember, even if you're pretty sure the eggs aren't good (unless they are very obviously clear) I'd leave them until well after the hatch date for the last egg. I had a few eggs in my last clutch which I were unsure about, and one turned out to be very much alive... I believe it's better to be safe than sorry :hap:
August 21, 200816 yr I do the same as maesie - I leave the eggs. In summer i was just about to toss some unhatched eggs because the chicks were geting big and the eggs looked past it. To my surprise one hatched!! There was over a week age gap between the chicks but i am so glad i left the eggs
August 22, 200816 yr Author Thanks for your support guys, there is no way that I would take any eggs off her until well past the due date of the last one. I am very convinced of the fact that I don't know when they were laid exactly so I will wait until the September if not later, I just couldn't live with myself if I threw one out and it was still alive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I bought another book this morning so that will keep my mind occupied! Both mums are still doing well and the dads are feeding them regularly! When I do there seed in the mornings the boys gorge themselves on everything then fly up and feed the ladies, then fly back and go again for themselves, its the same routine in the afternoons when I redo the seed and water and greens. August 25, 200816 yr Author hey guys, well yesterday one of Violets eggs finally hatched, I was so excited that I came running in to the house to tell my partner that it had hatched jumped on the bed and broke a few slats!!!!!! Then jumped off and rung AV (who by the way is a terrible influence, how do I explain two new fully feathered birds sitting in a quarintine cage) The baby has been feed well and mummy and daddy are doing a great job, egg 2 has started to hatch as of this afternoon, so I am just thrilled!I took some photo's sorry they are alittle blurry, I was shaking when I took them!Have a look at Violet and Cole's little wonder, oh I have no idea how something this size fits into the egg, I swear I dont remember them being this size!2ndand today 2ndAli's eggs still havent done a thing as yet 1 of them is a funny grey colour and when candled you can see the veins but instead of being red they are black, so I am assuming that it is a no go for some reason.I will keep you all informed and thanks again for all the support!!sorry mods I didnt realise that the photos were so huge!!!!!!!!!!
August 25, 200816 yr Author Mods I dont know how to fix this please can you delete the whole thing and I will repost with the photo's redused to the correct size, sorry again!!!!

Your photos are fine PS what colour is the babies eyes...dark black, plum coloured or red. Looks plum to me but the photos isnt the best for looking at eyes hey Kaz, thanks! I was going to ask actually, as the babies eyes are plum coloured and I have no idea what that means!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If anyone knows I would love to hear!! I will get a better picture tomorrow, due to the other egg hatching I thought it best to let mummy back in to give it the warmth it requires! By the way Ali chucked tnhe dark egg out and the baby was very very dead inside the egg stunk and all the viens inside were black, what could have caused this??
August 25, 200816 yr Plum eyes means the baby is cinnamon can also mean recessive but since you have a cinnamon parent, baby will be too. Dead in shell can be a few reasons but the most common is the egg isnt kept warm by the parents at some point after incubation begins. Dead in shell can also happen if the parents soccer boot the eggs all around in the nestbox Edited August 25, 200816 yr by KAZ
August 25, 200816 yr Author thanks Kaz, I hope that the babies are cinnamon, that will be great, I just hope they get some of daddies size though!! Oh dont know if I like the idea of dead in shell, I hope not all of them are like that!!!!
August 26, 200816 yr Author baby two arrived today, they are both very well feed and mummy and daddy are both very proud of them, when I checked on them this afternoon in the afternoon feeding round, both parents were in the nest, chirping away! Cole the father is still quiet tame so he was more than happy to come over to show me his accomplishments!!! I will post some photo's tomorrow of the two chicks! Ali has thrown another egg from the nest! This one was also a grey colour, when candled it to was all black inside, when opened it to was dead at an early development stage! I recandled the two remaining eggs, both still seem to have visable red veins in them, not black like the last two, so I hope that they are okay, but I am not holding my breath! If this clutch is all done, Ali and Buffy will go into a holding cage for a few weeks to regain strength and weight! I will give her another go in the breeding cages and see if she will go down in them this time.
August 26, 200816 yr Excellent news on your bubs this far!!! I'm very excited for you and can't wait to see more photos
August 27, 200816 yr Author well baby 1 is now three days old and baby 2 has gone over the 24 hour mark! Dispite being told by the other half that the babies look like chicken carcus ready to be cooked, I took a few more pics, Now I have decieded that my camera is just **** so need to find a reason to by a new one, and taking pics of baby birds isnt the other halfs idea of a valid reason! But these are the best that I could get at the present time! picture 1, Baby 2 just hatched, well kinda just mummy had already feed him! picture 2, Another after hatching! picture 3, Baby 1 @ 3 days old & baby 2 at 24hrs old picture 4, Also today! There is still nothing from Ali, She is still sitting and waiting and I am still hoping above hope that atleast one baby made it through! It breaks my heart to think that she has spent all this time on them, but to no avail!!
