Posted August 19, 200817 yr Jake seems to be going through a rough time at the moment. His beak is finally getting better but it is growing crooked. He is still living in a cage by himself. This morning when i checked him he has injured his wing during the night. Somehow he has broken all his flight feathers off one wing and it was bleeding. Whether something frightened him and he was flying mad in his cage. I cleaned the area and put cornflour on it but what i am wondering should i clip his other wing so he will not be off balance. I think he is one tough bird because even though he has had so many injuries he does not bother him. he is not stressed and when i found him he was eating, the bleeding was not bothering him at all. August 19, 200817 yr I cannot answer your wing clipping query as I dont wing clip. BUT I am inquiring whether or not you have pulled out the rest of the broken feather shafts ? If you havent you will need to.
August 19, 200817 yr Is is cage covered at night? If you find he is too off balance you can get it clipped for safety purposes.. Edited August 19, 200817 yr by Elly
August 19, 200817 yr I agree with Kaz - you might have some blood feathers to pull I wouldn't clip his other wing as it will take until he moults to grow back, where the feathers that came out last night will grow back in a few weeks and he will end up uneven again Edited August 19, 200817 yr by **Liv**
August 19, 200817 yr Author I did pull out the rest of the broken feathers when i cleaned it. After looking at it again i cannot work out how he would have done it because it looks like part of the bone is missing as well. Should i strap it to his body to help it heal quicker and so he does not bang it and make it bleed again.

Have you some betadine to put on the wound ?
August 19, 200817 yr Author No betadine but i do have a antiseptic cream, can you put it on budgies. do you want to see a picture at all so you can help me with what to do. He is happy in himself and does not seem worried by it all.
August 19, 200817 yr Author It looks like he has cut the feathers off but i have searched his cage and cannot find anything that is sharp enough to cause the damage. Here is a picture of his wing and a picture of the pile of feathers i found in the bottom of his cage this morning.
August 19, 200817 yr Feel that area Deb...looks like a feather cyst ...but it could just be the photo
August 19, 200817 yr Oh my - thats all this primary flights They all look in pretty good nick too. Not like they have been caught in anything. - are they joined together or just sitting in a pile?? Do you think he pulled them out??
August 19, 200817 yr Author Feel which area Kaz, i do not know what a feather cysts looks like. some of the feathers are joined together. i do not know if he pulled them out, i did not see him to do it so i have no idea how it happened.
August 19, 200817 yr To me the tip of his wing looks fine, bald, but fine. A feather cyst will grow like an ingrown hair and create a fast growing lump. You would be able to feel one along the wing. That is really bizarre! I can not think of what would have taken out all his feathers on one wing like that
August 19, 200817 yr A feather cyst starts out looking like a slightly bald patch at the end and where the feather shafts come out of. Then it looks quite pink and the skin looks a little shiny as it swells. There is warmth and heat in the lump. If you havent noticed that part of it happening, and he has knocked his wingtip, then the feathers that are involved in and around the cyst will fall out and there will be bleeding. What you will then see is the hole they came out of looking a lot like he has lost his wing tip like you have described now. :blink:That is really bizarre! I can not think of what would have taken out all his feathers on one wing like that A feather cyst would. Edited August 19, 200817 yr by KAZ
August 19, 200817 yr Author i had a feel of his wing and then one of my other budgies wings and i cannot feel any lump or any difference apart from missing his primary flights.
August 19, 200817 yr i had a feel of his wing and then one of my other budgies wings and i cannot feel any lump or any difference apart from missing his primary flights. If it was a feather cyst you wont feel a lump now as it has burst. But it accounts for the look of those feathers and the photo.
August 19, 200817 yr Author okay, least i know now what happened. Poor jack, i have been busy looking after his beak that i have not been taking any notice of his wings.

August 19, 200817 yr Poor boy How interesting. i didn't know that. So having popped does that mean it's fixed for now? Dose it also mean that he will get them recurring now too??
August 19, 200817 yr Author Poor boy How interesting. i didn't know that. So having popped does that mean it's fixed for now? Dose it also mean that he will get them recurring now too?? i was wondering the same thing. At the beginning of the year Jake had to be treated for fatty lipoma cysts in his chest and i am wondering if this is related.
August 19, 200817 yr In my experience and talking with other breeders cysts seem to be a hereditary condition..... i.e. they run in families. They are also very prevalent when birds are bred too closely ...father/daughter and mother/son. But in that case I would say it has to be a genetic thing that is brought to the fore by breeding two faults. I have been given birds with cysts to breed from, but the cysts keep coming back and while they have them they arent healthy enough to breed from, so I retire them from breeding.
August 19, 200817 yr Oh, that poor boys. He obviously has good stong blood in him as he sounds like he is not fussed. Good on you for taking the time to help him through all of his injuries... Please keep us updated and hugs of luck to you!
