Posted August 18, 200816 yr Hey everyone, got home this afternoon and fb (fuzzball) had gotten out of the box and was tucked in next to it (my other half found him when he got home). So he put fb back n the box and mum has been caring for him/her. He has some blood on the base of his tail but its stopped bleeding now. I was just wondering what age they usually start to try leave the box? Maybe one of the breeders could put up a chick timeline of what to expect at week intervils for those less experianced and have it pinned? Thanks alot
August 18, 200816 yr It was the right move to put FB back in the nestbox. They USUALLY fledge (leave the nest box) around the 4-5 weeks of age mark. Check out our FAQ's Care of baby budgies in the nest. This will give you loads of info and I myself often find myself reading it every now and then. Also... just watch that the bleeding doesn't start up again. Is there an obvious injury?
August 18, 200816 yr Author No i couldnt see anything too obvious, just some matted bloody feathers, will have a look tomorrow after work. Silly little bugger was climbing all over me though was soo cute Thanks for the info
August 18, 200816 yr Keep a close eye. The hen could be attacking it because she may want to start a new clutch.
August 18, 200816 yr okay, cool. When you check him out tomorrow night, try and give the area a clean with warm water and a cotton ball. Don't press hard but you should be able to remove the blood and get a good look. Also agree with Liv... watch out as it might happen again and then you'll need to do something about it.

August 18, 200816 yr okay See is FB is eating by him self at aged 4 weeks you can be suprised.. I was Bring him on so you can check his wound from yesterday, give that a clean up and then Sprinkle seed on the floor, Sheet, Paper, or Something. - That will encourage him to search for food on the ground ... Good time to check on any other young in the nestbox too Other members may have another idea
August 18, 200816 yr Author Theres no other babies or eggs at the moment. Do you guys think taking her out of the cage for a long period to check her wounds and see if she will eat would be a bad thing? i just dont want to leave her in there and hae something bad happen to her :S Edited August 19, 200816 yr by **Liv** Please do not use shortcuts. changed "atm" to "at the moment"
August 18, 200816 yr Seems you have two topics going about the same thing kind of ? If its the same chicks you are talking about in your other topic and its 4-5 weeks old it is ready to leave the nestbox. If it has all its feathers and it is certainly the age to fledge, then leave it out for the daytime and see how it goes. At the age of 4-5 weeks the Mums want them oput of the nestbox to lay more eggs. If the mum is doing that, you need to deicide if you are going to stop her having another clutch by removing the nestbox, or not. If she has had two clutches you need to stop her having a third.
August 19, 200816 yr Author Thanks Kaz yeah i sort of do have two topics that where about different things which is now the same (now im confused heehee). So i have fb ( need too think of a name...) inside now, the parentls havent called for her nor has she them. My question is how often to i need to feed her? at the moment her crop is full so im guessing not for a few hours but how often after that? every 6 hours? Thanks Again :hap: i really appreciate it
August 19, 200816 yr If you are feeding her ( isn't she eating already) Then the crop needs to be empty !!! other wise you can cause serious issues If she is feeding by herself leave seeds in there and check to make sure that she is eating at there will be empty shells from the seeds
August 19, 200816 yr Author Yeah she has been eating hahahaha she hasnt made it to 8 weeks on her own heehee, how do i know if her crop is empty, i know when its full i can feel it, do i just assume when i cant feel it its empty? Im really keen to do the right thing and thats why im asking so many questions:) maybe someone would like to chat to me on msn? mite be easier? pm for details thanks Edited August 19, 200816 yr by KAZ
August 19, 200816 yr If the budgie is 8 weeks old it should be eating on its own and flying around and have no need for a nestbox.
August 19, 200816 yr Author Sorry for the confusion thats supposed to be 4-5 weeks old... i have no idea where 8 weeks came from must be mondayitis..... oh wait its tuesday
